I think it's fair to believe he still would have requested a trade after Gaudreau left even if Chucky had a longer term contract in place.
He could have still previously signed long-term with the Flames and forced his way out. I get the frustration as a fan, but why assume he wouldn't want out with a longer contract?
Now maybe if Chucky was signed long-term Gaudreau would have stayed? Who knows.

I agree 100%. Might have been a tripping call in a reg season game, but didn’t look blatant. Can’t call that with a min left in an elimination game. I’d be really angry if I were the Canes. I was cheering for the panthers, but that call decided the game. I feel bad for brind-amour, seems like a good dude.

Don’t hold your breath for those type of heroics, as that is not happening. He may be better next year, but that is still to be determined, only time will tell.

Oh totally, I’m just saying we probably have him another year and he bolts as a UFA. Either way Matthew wouldn’t have been a long time Flame.

I always lov.de Tkachuk when he was here.
The guy forced his way out and I'm really shocked at how many Flames fans are happy he's on the verge of being instantly rewarded for it.

So 5 or 6 years at $10M+. I've also heard that 6 years at $9.5M-$10M was his ask at that time.
Honestly I still think going 3 x $7M is the right deal even with hindsight if that was the ask. He wasn't worth $10M at that time, and the 19-20 and 20-21 season proved that.
Plus that deal would walk him to UFA. Having him as an RFA on expiry still was the right call. If he really wanted to stay he could have and could have cashed in for 8 more years, he didn't so they were able to work out a pretty good return for him on a sign and trade.
If he still demanded a trade last offseason with 2 or 3 years at $10M left on his deal he'd probably of commanded less than what he got with a sign and trade for 8 more years

I blame Giold and his crappy leadership. That for sure left a sour taste for Chucky.

They seem to hate each other too. Don’t think Gio will be popping champagne for Chuk when he wins the cup.

I remember his presser after the bridge contract and he said how much he fell in love with the city and he had family in Winnipeg, so Western Canada wasn’t out of his league. I really think Tre missed the boat by not signing him long term while he could.

I am more worried that this added pressure might be detrimental. Hopefully, I am wrong.

#### like this makes me feel bad for Huberdeau.
He's not the one that asked for a trade. There is also a reason it was Huberdeau, Weegar, Schwindt and a 1st and not just a 1 for 1 trade.
Tkachuk was the better player, younger with more upside, and the trade reflected that.

Actions speak louder than words...especially with Tkachuk. He bolted the first chance he got and I've heard from former teammates that he says whatever makes him look good in the media.
Hell at his season end press conference he said he wanted to sign long term and then asked for a trade a couple weeks later.
It's all lip service to make himself look good.

This is dumb...why talk trash about Huberdeau. Tkachuk was the player the Flames drafted and developed who forced his way out. Huberdeau had no say and was willing to sign here after a monster season.

Also, if the COVID restrictions were really tough on him, as some have said, he may have asked for a trade in the summer of 2021 if he had more than a year left.
