As emergency doctors we have front row seats to a critical system-wide healthcare crisis in Alberta. Despite our best efforts to provide comprehensive and accessible care 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, we are increasingly unable to do so. We are writing this letter to add our voices to the growing concerns of the state of healthcare in our province and as a call for action.

Signs of a capacity crisis are everywhere. The wait time in Calgary’s Emergency Departments has skyrocketed, with patients sometimes waiting up to 15 hours to be seen by a doctor. These patients often become sicker while waiting. We worry about these patients every shift. It is now common to have 40 to 50 people waiting to be seen by a doctor at any given time in any of our emergency waiting rooms. Frail, elderly patients languish on stretchers in hospital hallways. Patients with mental health crises are housed in the emergency room, often for several days, while awaiting inpatient beds. Sections of our emergency departments are routinely closed due to a lack of our highly skilled specialized emergency nurses. Increasingly, there are gaps without surgical and cardiac specialist coverage in our city’s hospitals. While all of this is occurring in Alberta’s largest city, we are regularly asked to consider covering rural sites who are equally suffering with staffing shortages and intermittent closures of their urgent care and emergency departments.

This is a letter signed by 190 Calgary ER doctors, and is a must read for any who believed Smith when she said she fixed healthcare. It lays out the problems clearly, and how the UCP contributed to them. This government is failing, and our system is in real trouble.

Please consider this when you vote, because you never know when you will need the ER, and when you do, you'll find out just what kind of hell it can be. You will wonder when it is your turn. You'll watch the wait time clock increase in 45 minute jumps. You'll wander to the washroom, to see a hallway full of patients on stretchers, moaning, or motionless, awaiting help that is hours away. You'll see a limited staff doing their best to care for the ill, but unable to keep up. You will see endless desperation from both sides of the counter, and you'll wonder why the government allows this to happen. And it will be because you gave them permission. Stop the suffering.

I'm convinced the UCP want the system to fail so they can used creamed corn logic to introduce more private healthcare. Then they'll be able to say "see? We tried public healthcare, even with a public guarantee, it didn't work".

This is why after Smith stands with her big placard, you still get guys like Neudorf and Geston saying things moving towards privatization.

Of course that's her plan, she said it in a video. Paraphrasing..."If AHS can't meet the terms we want them to, we can do and RFP to give it to a different entity to run our hospitals"

https://twitter.com/user/status/1656335790622883841

The secret evil plan isn't even secret, she's been explaining her position for 20 years. Yet we still have UCP voters who will be shocked and surprised when she implements it.

I have to agree with a previous post saying the NDP has done a pretty poor job getting their message out telling Albertans they are the sensible choice who will be good for business and for people. They have also been really soft on showing how much of a clown show the UCP is.

I dont think they've done enough to sway the undecideds, and that's really unfortunate.

Noam Chomsky said it best:

"That’s the standard technique of privatization: defund, make sure things don’t work, people get angry, you hand it over to private capital."

And slightly expanded:

"Social Security is actually in pretty good shape despite what everybody screams about. But if you can defund it, it won't be in good shape. And there is a standard technique of privatization, namely defund what you want to privatize. Like when Thatcher wanted to defund the railroads, first thing to do is defund them, then they don't work and people get angry and they want a change. You say okay, privatize them and then they get worse."

Wishful thinking is when you vote UCP hoping that this time, somehow, Danielle Smith will turn out to be a halfway competent premier, learn her lesson and behave ethically, stop rubbing elbows with self-declared fascists and racists and quit giving comfort to enemies of Canada like Artur Pawlowski.

What’s the cutoff to avoid the wrath? Does it have to be 16 of 16?
If you agree with most of the points then why didn't you say so? You went immediately to

1 - Discredit the author (pointed out his follower count as if it meant anything)
2 - Focused on one point you disagree with (point #11)
3 - Made an attempt to paint a "both sides/many sides" situation without any relevant reasoning
4 - Made 0 attempts to point out that the author was correct on most points.

Your response came across as a drive by without any consideration for the article and you are surprised people got upset with it and labeled you? Maybe you don't like the label, but if you are quacking like a duck, people are gonna assume youre a duck. You didn't even attempt any meaningful debate or discussion, so yes, you are acting like a UCP diehard.

Canada’s going to return to normal starting with this election.
People are tired of the fear mongering and the divisiveness.
It’s why all the constant attack ads aren’t working.

Canada returning to normal, i.e. the centre-left country it has been for the vast majority of it's existence? I realize Yoho doesn't think for himself and just parrots whatever the right wing griftopshere tells him, but interesting take there.

The people claiming that we need to end this divisiveness are always the people leading the divide.

They want to unify - under their banner.

Man I almost entirely forgot that First Lady was Cory Morgan's wife.

The Occupy thread was a real rollercoaster for those two.
