Maybe... But Nonis would replace Conroy. I don't think he's coming on to do the daily Wranglers ops. Maybe Pascal follows Tre, but I think it's more likely there is no NHL role for him outside of Calgary and he stays. Unless Conroy tells him to pack his ####.

Here are a few articles and there has been lot's of talk on the radio and some other media forms as well.

As I said before, it's not that Conroy hasn't earned his promotion or that this is completely out of left field. I get it, ownership is comfortable with a guy they know and is coming in probably on the lower end of the salary line given his experience. He isn't bringing in a $25 million dollar contract over the next 5 years.

I just don't think in a hypothetical scenario if the Lighting/Hawks/Stars/Capitals or any other team with a lot of recent winning would be clamoring to hire specifically Conroy.

I hope I am wrong and I hope Conroy does well and is an out of the box thinker, has full control to do what is needed. I just don't wanna hear that the Flames global search for a top manager in the sport led them to believe that the best overall person for the job was the guy who has played a key role in the management of the club for 10+ years when our performance overall has been suspect.

Nonis was pretty ####ty, I'd rather he continue his tradition of following Burke.

Nonis was a truculence over skill guy, no? His team concepts were from 20 years ago, has he changed?

The fact that Nonis was hired to be assistant does seem a bit like a baby sitter role. I don't like that. Conroy should hire his own assistant.

I'm hoping Iggy's role is similar to how Conroy joined the back office with the Flames.

Practically every organization hires from within and tries to groom successors. You can literally take any team, except the recent expansion teams, and find current or recent examples of hiring people already familiar with the organization for roles in management and coaching. I am not sure why the Flames are expected to be the one to not do it.

Even when you do hire from outside, those people typically bring in others that they previously worked with. It's essentially the same concept.

Nothing wrong with Nonis in an AGM role - lots of experience. And maybe he excels at something that the organization feels Conroy could use support with. Maybe he is great at contracts, or at cap management, or whatever.

Just as it was Treliving who was steering the ship while he was here, it will be Conroy doing so now. So the more they want to strengthen the bench, the better, IMO.

Friedman on his podcast made it sound like Pascal was staying in an AGM role.

Really? Nonis was not exactly a new NHL, skilled youngster, type of GM.

I guess we find out tomorrow. I hope Nonis is not involved, but I'm sure Dreger would know as soon as a contract was signed, so I'll probably be disappointed with that.

I don’t think we know what Nonis is hired as, do we?

The report is “senior management role.”

He signed Clarkson

Agreed it's like hiring a head coach but picking his assistants. That's why I think Huska and Muller should go.

It will be interesting what Iggy has in mind but I think he's being groomed like Conroy was.

Both guys during the Brent era said we needed to score so think they will value skill scoring speed over face punchers.

True, I hope you are right.

Dave Nonis though? Yeesh.

Nonis is okay as a second banana guy. Seems to be his career niche.

Nothing there that suggests the media are carrying water, or claiming he's 'the best candidate in recent memory'

Hiring Nonis as an AGM would be fine. A GM can't be everywhere at once and needs people to delegate assignments to. Having an experienced person who knows the job to delegate to is a bonus because they will require little guidance or supervision.

I don't see it as a baby sitter role as some suggested. I see it more like making sure that Conroy doesn't need to break in someone with little experience to assist him. He doesn't need more to worry about.

I think you are projecting somewhat. I still don't see any examples of this:

" I just haven't heard mountains of evidence of him being the highest commodity in the game from other organizations.."

But I suppose it comes down to whether or not you believe the premise that I've put forth, which is that the actual top GM candidates are out of reach for the Flames. They won't get them. So you either go further down that list or you hire within.

I would have preferred the Flames went in a completely different direction.

Perhaps their first choices were not available or they were unable to agree as to terms.

Or perhaps Conroy was their first choice.

Edit. I agree with Jiri. I suspect the top of the list candidates were not willing to take the job so you go down the list of outside names or hire Conroy from within.

I have always wondered why a guy like Mile Gilles, the former player/ agent/GM in Vancouver never got any other shot. He was a very innovative thinker in a lot of ways with bringing in sleep/travel specialists to try and give the Canucks, who are the most traveled team, a bit of an advantage. He made some really good moves, signed some good contracts and got good value resigning some key players. He interviewed for a position or two but ultimately decided to teach contract law in BC.

In fairness, Burke did go out of his way to draft the Sedin’s.

I find the criticism baffling.

Conroy is a bad hire because you wanted who? Tulsky? That guy you’d never heard of 12 weeks ago and don’t know anything about what he does on the day to day?

Or Conroy is a bad hire because Toronto doesn’t want him? It just screams of “the grass is always greener”/FOMO to sit back and dump on Conroy being named GM.

I am plenty critical of this organization - annoyingly so to many of you, but there’s nothing to be critical of when it comes to this move because as fans we don’t know #%^* about projecting the next good general manager in the league.

“Oh it’s the old boys club”…yeah, Colorado really shouldn’t have hired Joe Sakic. What a bunch of idiots.
