Could be. I think the Habs are going full rebuild still so I don’t see them wanting to trade their picks but their defense is really thin. Hanifin would be a big addition for them.
Washington is a tough call because they haven’t drafted this high in a very long time (2007 I think). Going to take a serious overpay to pull that pick from them. Feels like their biggest priorities right now would be restocking the prospect cupboards and getting Ovechkin his scoring record. Nothing the flames have will help with that - unless they think Huberdeau is their best chance at giving Ovechkin another elite playmaker for the last years of his contract. But I think they’re hoping backstrom makes a comeback.

With Columbus losing out on Bedard and Fantilli, they seem like a natural target if Lindholm won't sign an extension before the start of the season.
Sillinger, Mateychuk and the 23rd overall would create a one year turnaround for the Flames. Mateychuk would be the best D prospect immediately (yes, better than Poirier) and incoming center depth would be Sillinger, Zary and potentially two of Danielson, Ritchie, Stenberg or Heidt.
Columbus runs with Lindholm, Johnson and Carlsson at 3rd overall in the future.
Win Win?

The smartest thing ever would be to retain 50% of the contract and really push the return up with contenders up against the cap for a young blue chip prospect plus pick(s). Would we ever do that in a million years? No, not a chance.
We're a dumb (Murray led) team and we'll middle, middle, middle, middle, middle until the end of time. It's what we do and we do it well. Better to make a couple bull**** moves/signings that makes us a threat.....to make the playoffs.

Just kidding.
I expect Calgary will try and extend him, using money saved by trading Backlund and Hanifin. Hopefully it was Sutter that made him want out.
But if he won’t sign, they gotta trade him.

If Flames extend zadorov which they should if reasonable - he needs to be in the top 4 for that price. Get a guy like Stecher for depth.
Zadorov - Anderson
Klyington - weegar
? - Stecher
Ain't the best but ain't the worst. I feel flames D always suffers when overstocked on talent
Trade both hanafin and tanev.

Speculation. Was more serious speculation before Sutter got the boot.
The logic breakdown though suggests Lindholm may be on the out regardless because of long term cap management. Lindholm deserves to get paid and get term. Can we keep him in the fold?

I think that's frankly an unrealistic return. Columbus isn't ready to compete yet, and those guys are important to their core going forward.

If Columbus does go after a defenceman (as is the rumour), I'd look at 23rd overall, 34th overall, and the 66th overall as a solid return for Noah Hanifin.
23rd (LAK 1st)
34th (CBJ 2nd)
66th (CBJ 3rd)
I think this gives Columbus the defenceman they're after, and also gives the Flames a quick reload of youth into the system.
The defence then goes:
Weegar - Andersson
Kylintgon - Tanev
Zadorov - Stetcher/Etc
Gilbert
It gives the Flames a chance to compete because they believe they're a very good team, while also addressing one of the worst prospect pools in the league. This move cuts the cap they need to cut.
It gives the Blue Jackets the young defenceman that they need to help bolster that position at a cost that seems fairly tolerable from their perspective.
Noah signs a big extension and joins Gudbranson and Gaudreau in Columbus.

Taking a while to get to 5000

In the past I've been hesitant to entertain the trade Hanifin talk, but honestly the team needs a shakeup and this move feels entirely likely.
So, while I don't want to see Hanifin traded I wouldn't be shocked if he does go to Columbus

Columbus has a slew of prospects including a log jam of defensive prospects going into next year. They do definitely need a solid roster ready defenseman, and Hanifin could fit the bill.
But I don't see Columbus giving up 3 picks, I think they would be much more inclined to do 1-2 picks + a D prospect/young roster player.
This is their D depth:
Denton Mateychuk
Stanislav Svozil
Corson Ceulemans
David Jiricek
Adam Boqvist
Nick Blankenburg
I doubt they even think of trading Jircek/Mateychuk but I think any of the others could be available.

Have to think there's a fit with the Avalanche for Lindholm or even Backlund given the news on Landeskog.

The Avs dont have a big prospect pool and I doubt they subtract from their roster to pickup a Lindholm/Backlund.
Their picks are also very sparse:
27th this year then nothing until 5th
1st next year and no 2nd/3rd
No 2nd in 2025
What would you be looking at from the Avs that would make the most sense?
Byram - Lindholm swap of some sort?
Looking at forwards, if you want younger that list is small:
Newhook
Sampo Ranta
Foudy
Olausson
