I've seen a few 'inmates running the asylum' or blaming the two big forward acquisitions last season, or even Markstrom.

This wasn't one or two players complaining or pouting. This was a LOT of people Maloney talked to (including some outside the organization) who made it known it was best to move on. Pretty obvious to Maloney a lot of people wanted him gone. Sutter has a very short shelf life, and here we are.

Very excited for next season, going to be a breath of fresh air for everyone in the organization.

If Backlund really wants out:

1 year of Backlund to Florida for 2 years of Bennett to Calgary

I'm really unsure of who would add...Backlund is the far more complete player, but Bennett has youth on his side.

Yo Backs, remember my Backlund jersey you signed for me back in 2019? Well, the ink has kinda worn out. Can you re-sign it for me? My DM’s are open

I don't think backchecking is what affected Huby. It was the cycling down low, puck battles, and board battles where Huby consistently looked below average.

We didn't see Huby do much well this season. Does anyone have game tape of Huby in Florida we can watch? I'm really curious to see how exactly he put up all those points. Does he mostly operate in open ice?

Florida isn't trading us Sam Bennett especially for Backlund.

It's strange Backlund even went to this event today was he making sure Sutter was actually gone.

Either way, his way worked but it isn't the modern way.

It never worked, that is why he is gone.

I think that the player that will drag this team to playoff success is not on the roster yet or is a young player that is on the team but was not given an opportunity.

Huberdeau is unfortunately someone we're stuck with because of how the CBA works. All we can hope is that we can get the most out of him.

And it seems it wasn’t just a kid complaining about ice time, or a guy who some argue was a prima donna like Tkachuk - this was a lifer like Backlund. If Backlund or Tanev or other leaders say it, it gets noticed.

You people act like Huberdeau put up a bunch of secondary assists riding Sam Bennett and Anthony Duclair to a record setting season.

He's no fluke.

Maybe once he's utilized properly and used on the powerplay properly we will see why he got the bag.

This. The team doesn’t have the gamebreakers it needs, but they’re stuck with Huby’s contract so they gotta do what they can to get the most out of him while he’s still in his prime. We’ve seen Karlsson’s value skyrocket this year off of his 100 point season. He had teams willing to actually trade for his contract. It’s possible the same could happen for Huby

Depends what you mean by “blame”. I certainly blame them for their play and the effect it had on the team. Which is not the same as endorsing Sutter as the right coach.

We know this organization has no issues replacing the coach in search of a quick fix. Do they have the players that can sustain any success. We sure haven’t seen that and I hope the organization understands which players are committed to winning vs. individual success.

Absolutely, that year end interview with him was sad to watch. Looked like a guy that wasn't enjoying the game at all and wanted out. Really hope he sticks around, and gets a 'C' on his shoulder as well.

Why is it strange? It was reported that he made the ask when everyone was abandoning ship because he wasn’t interested in a rebuild. Not that it is a current request

It sure seemed to me that Backlund is at the stage of his career where he wants to win. He put up career numbers and they were completely wasted. It he wants out its because he doesn't think he can win here. Multiple people noted disagreements between players, including some of the players themselves.

I know Chucky would love it if Backs got sent to Florida. I forgot which interview he said this in, but when the trade happened he talked about how good of a player Backs is and how it was very emotional saying goodbye to him

If this move is accompanied by some significant roster moves then I certainly will back off the inmates running the asylum angle, but if the team is bringing back basically the same team (all teams under go some change) then it is hard not to see the club made the dumb decision to put the blame on the coach and back some very weak minded players.

Players in leagues across all sports have dealt with bad coaches and still played well. Gaudreau and Tkachuk are part of the rumoured people that wanted not part of Sutter look at their play last season. The Kings hated him so much they won Two Cups with him and did jack #### after him. If we are running back the same crew and hoping a new coach is the fix I think there are a lot of reasons to be skeptical about the decision making there.

As for the big two off-season acquisitions even if people want to put the majority of the blame on Sutter, there were large parts of their game last season that were flat out #### that is not the fault of the coach. Kadri's laziness is inexcusable even if he hates the coach for a player making 7 million and brought in for his leadership.

The I looked at this was that they were contract year, they were as much playing for Sutter as they were playing for themselves so they can land a big contract. Gaudreau specifically.

Suppose Huby and Kadri were signed for 7 years at a combined ~$20m per season. And they make it clear they can't (or won't) play well under sutter. And the organization knows there is zero trade market for those two players. And so the team is forced to fire the coach.

Would Maloney tell the truth? Or would he say something like "I conducted 25 exit interviews and it became clear to me that we had to move on from the coach".
