It works...when you also get elite goaltending. But the margins are slim with his system.
In 03-04 that team was nothing without Kipper. They were outside of the playoffs before the trade for Kipper and then he put up .933 in the regular season and .928 in the playoffs.
11-12 was somewhat similar in that Quick went into god mode and put up a .946 save percentage. Some of that was Sutter's structure - but Quick carried that team all season.
13-14 is the best example of it being more his system. Quick was good but not amazing with a .911 and they still won the cup in convincing fashion.

I get the "didn't mesh with Sutter's personality, the guy is toxic, not a pleasant guy, bad for confidence, bad for morale, negative, condescending. Fire that coach"
I don't get the "ahh...that style of hockey Sutter likes (the kind that wins in the playoffs), it's not for me. I can't win battles along the boards. I can't win most 50/50 battles. I can't hold puck possession in the zone. It's not my strength. Bring in a coach who plays my style and I'll kill it in the regular season"

The team was 31st in cross offensive zone passes
Ring it around to the point and get traffic in front
Just get pucks on net and see what happens

I find it funny that coaches, trainers, players and agents got mentioned as people who spoke up about Darryl and its Hubderdeau's fault because he was defending a young player who was treated like trash.
We should be happy we have a guy on the team who is standing up for his teammates.

The best style to win with in the playoffs is the best style that fits your roster its not a one style fits all and that is the why Sutter is out of a job today.
Colorado was a rush team and won, you didn't see the coaches try to get them to grind it along the walls.
Its also a heavy special teams league now as well, you need to score on the powerplay.
This team wasn't constructed to win 2-1 hockey games, and not many teams are now.
|
Colorado was not a rush team. They hemmed you in, held possession and came in waves. They had talent to score on the rush, but that wasn't their game.

I agree with you on this. But it's not my area of concern. Is Huby a player who can win in the playoffs? Can you build a team around Huby and have playoff success?

This team is inbred and collapsing on itself. Conroy (and Pascal) are part of the problem and not the solution (too close to the picks they had a hand in). Pick a competent replacement from an organization with a history of actually winning something. Not this inane treadmill we’ve been on for what 34 years? Just my opinion but I’d clean em all out. In my opinion Conroy is a Treliving retread.

I think it's possible. Huberdeau was scapegoated for the Panthers struggles last year and the year before against Tampa.
But in 20-21 he put up 10 points in 6 games against the Lightning. 3 more points than anybody else on the team.
Funny part is he led the team in scoring in the sweep against the Lightning last year too (2 points).
He's not McDavid, Mackinnon, or maybe even Tkachuk, but he's pretty good.
It's funny though.
In 20-21 Huberdeau had 10 points in 6 playoffs games when they lost to the Lightning and it was a failure.
This year Tkachuk has 11 points in 7 playoffs games but they beat the Bruins and he's the hero.
It's a fine line in this league sometimes.

As of right now there are 9 coaches in the playoffs and none of them are Sutter. Just because Huberdeau has an issue playing one particular coach's style doesn't necessarily mean that he has an issue playing playoff hockey. That's a pretty big extrapolation.

I think that it was Bingo that has shown that other than the first line last year, the lines didn't fair very well. Plus, the first line really didn't play Sutter's style.

Is there any concern about building your team around a winger? We went down this road with Iginla, Gaudreau, and now Huberdeau? Are we just going to continue to eschew common knowledge on what makes a team successful in the NHL?

Darryl was always gonna Darryl, but I'm still kind of in disbelief and trying to fathom somehow, some way, that Darryl Darryl'd so hard that we're actually here now. Like, what in the actual eff happened? They're an NHL team, not a family restaurant on a Gordon Ramsey nightmare show. Jaysus...

I think Gaudreau really ####ed this franchise. Imagine if he stayed and Tkachuk didn't want out (because that Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk line could be really good for a long time).
Sutter probably doesn't do whatever the hell it was he was doing this year. I think when Gaudreau and Tkachuk left, Sutter probably shrugged his shoulders and said, "F it."

I wonder if playing him so high up in the lineup was sticking it to Treliving as well. He didn't deserve the minutes he got but he also didn't deserve to be scratched and playing 6 minutes.

A GM is responsible for ensuring that player's get developed. If you have a coach who refuses to play clearly deserving prospects, you're going to end up with a group of prospects that had great potential but, then, never got the opportunity to develop in the NHL.
I'm really excited to see what this group can do with 2-4 young players in the lineup next year. Even the Oilers, who can't draft, are getting contributions from Klim Kostin (yes, I realize they didn't draft him either, not the point). Most successful teams have young players who are hungry and step it up to provide depth scoring. Lewis, Ritchie, and Lucic were not going to be the ones to step up their game.
