I suppose Sutter had worn out his welcome. I am somewhat disappointed as this organizations track records with coaches not named Darryl Sutter over the last 20ish years is not great. Of course there are definitely coaches in the NHL that are better than Darryl, however the Flames org. simply has been unable to find one. Promoting Love could be a good choice, but I hope they cast a wide net in their search. As we have seen AHL success is not necessarily an indication of NHL success. Plenty of NHL guys who had sparkling AHL records and just didn't translate into the NHL, Gulutzan, Eakins and Blashill are names that come to mind.

This franchise is a complete joke.

I think you will like them ok next year, when there’s a coach in place that uses them properly.

Darryl, is that you?
I actually really like Huberdeau and I'm pulling for a bounce back.

Definitely bittersweet. I think Darryl got all he could out of the team last year and still view him as an elite systems coach. I will always look back fondly at the Dallas series last year.
Really impressed that Maloney was true to his word with his audit, and was able to communicate his recommendations well enough to convince ownership to move on from $8.4 million.

Respect to Darryl for his years of contributions to this team. Thanks for the memories.
Nothing lasts forever, and his secret sauce from years past stopped working. He chose not to adjust and here we are, watching from the outside.
This needed to happen. I wish Darryl the best and I will cheer his induction into the Hall as he takes his place among the all time coaching greats, because he is definitely one of them.
Ride on cowboy.

It’s a positive step. He had his shelf life and purpose at the time. Skill is major part of the league now and suppressing that for a dump and chase and ride out philosophy, is simply dated. This team has to have a better focus on scoring on the top lines. Happy they did this. The direction will be set in a week or two when the GM is hired. I’d prefer Tim Hunter but something tells me they’re going to do Conroy. Tough decisions for this off-season. Wouldn’t want that for Conroy but we’ll see.

I remember a post game road loss interview with Tanev where he was pissed and kept saying “apparently I’m a leader on the team and it’s my fault”. Or something along those lines.
I figured Sutter had just chewed them out and singled out players. I thought the tire fire started right about then.

Problem is it’s become more and more clear that a lot of players are also saying “not a place I’d like to play”.

I met Darryl at a hotel with my daughters Midget team a few years ago, when he was not in the NHL.
He was nothing like his "coach persona"
He was completely engaged with the team and spent a good 45 mins talking to them over breakfast as players drifted in and out of breakfast.
He wasn't rude to the parents, but it was clear he was interested and enjoying his time talking hockey to some female athletes.
It was impressive and something I like to remember.

Everyone knows how stubborn Sutter is. He's smart, but his square peg round hole mentality has a short shelf life. The extension was a mistake and premature. Why do coaches seem so egocentric?
