Florida going full-fascist now
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...rce=reddit.com
I wouldn't be surprised to see Desantis make a new state flag with red and black as it's primary colors

That is actually such an insane tax rule. I don't know the specifics so i could be wrong here, but
US court cases do not have the loser pay the winner legal fees like in Canada. While that may sound sweet (i can sue and not worry about incurring fees if i lose) it actually is more beneficial to companies as they can essentially swamp a litigant in legal fees without repercussion.
I assume deducting all legal fees is not applicable, but the mere fact that litigation legal fees can be is pretty crazy. Worse yet, it appears it isn't just the legal fees but the actual settlement or judgment amount?!? that is absolutely insane.
There is obviously more to it, and it has to be far more complicated, but damn is the US ever a corporate oligarchy/kleptocracy

Do you really think so? There's a reason we're seeing Republicans go full-tilt Handmaid's Tale now, and that's because they've already hijacked the supreme court. The only way out of this is if one of the hard right court members dies, or Biden somehow manages to expand it

I seriously doubt, as conservative as that court now is, that they'd sign off on kidnapping trans children and removing parental rights. They very conservative, not completely bat#### and un-American.
That's the kind of thing you would hear about in Iran or something. I can't imagine they have the stomach to back something like this.

Considering they’re religous zelots by in large, I have zero trouble imagining it.
They believe in the invisible man who lives in the sky. Everything after that is on the table.
The good news in this mess? Young women are being motivated to vote.

I tend to agree, the only thing that will hold them back is the cost of looking after the kids in the care system

Like most governments, they will do the absolute bare-minimum to "care" for those kids and will almost certainly discard them within the bounds of their childcare apparatus as quickly as you can say "I Miss Jeb Bush"
Doubly so under this pretense.

I don't know if that's that far a stretch. The state already has the right to take away kids under some circumstances, this is just adding some more circumstances.
The devil as always is in the details, but there's a lot of people who would view gender affirming care in the same way as I'd view those camps they send you to to cure being gay.
Would I support taking away kids of someone who was sending their gay son or daughter to such a camp? Maybe, it seems like an extreme level of emotional abuse.
They'd view gender affirming care in the exact same light so not sure if it's that far a stretch. States rights, they can determine what's kidnap-able!

Which is probably counterproductive, given his national ambitions. The more news out of Florida, the more Desantis' poll numbers against Trump are dropping. A short, pudgy guy with a shrill voice and a wooden personality was always going to have an uphill battle for President, and extreme policies in Florida likely aren't going to help him any nationally.

At least “only” two are bat-#### crazy
https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/us-sup...pill-1.6818406
The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday preserved women's access to a drug used in the most common method of abortion, rejecting lower-court restrictions while a lawsuit continues
…
The court's action on Friday almost certainly will leave access to mifepristone unchanged at least into next year#as appeals play out, including a potential appeal to the high court.
Justice#Samuel Alito, the author of last year's decision overturning Roe v. Wade, and Justice Clarence Thomas voted to allow restrictions to take effect. No other justices commented.

The only thing more powerful than hateful rightwing ideology right now is money, and pharma pumps a ton of it in US politics. The rest of the justices aren't about to upset that gravy train, Thomas and Alito are just in the swan song of their careers so they don't give a #### anymore

Rightwing ideology is always about the money, these hypocritical bible-thumping idiots don't believe a thing about the BS they spew, it's all about the coffers, always has been.

Hypocritical?
Luke 14:12-14
He said also to the one who had invited him, ‘When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’
I mean it's right there in black and white, from Jesus himself; f*** the poor.
