The NBA is NHL-esque in that it has some small market teams in one sport towns like Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Portland, Memphis, and Oklahoma City. Maybe in another 10 years two of these end up in Seattle and Vegas

San Antonio is the 7th biggest US city by population. Though tbf, it's metro population is much further down the list.

The current MSG was opened in 1968 and has undergone two major renovations ($200M in 1991 and $1B+ in 2011). MSG is far from perfect, considering the constraints, but it as state of the art as you get for a renovation. Ironically, there have been multiple plans fora new Garden near the existing one, but they've elected to renovate rather than construct new. I think real estate values for high rises probably makes that land more attractive. Fortunately the Flames don't have that problem.

Strange? It's only colour for the conversation. Did you feel I was being confrontational?
Of course it's apples to lawn mowers, in consideration to land value, and market.

The A's have been talking about going there or San Jose before the Golden Knights were ever a thing.
I don't think MLB wanted them moving again but it dragged on for so long (and with the NHL and NFL already there), that they're fine with it at this point. The site they chose has no room for parking though, and apparently it's only going to seat 30,000.
Also, I have heard that they didn't want to allow any more expansion teams before the Oakland/Tampa Bay stadium situations are resolved.

Those saying they hope the team moves and someone will pay for an expansion team and build an arena in Calgary are insane.
Flames leave. That’s it… forever
There are plenty of markets ahead of Calgary. The league doesn’t need to bring back another Canadian medium market

Considering you get butt hurt when people speak poorly of your team, it's pretty big talk there, Arizona.

Last time I checked, having an agreement is very different from having an actual building. No concert, nor a sports team, can play in a theoretical aggreged upon Event Centre.
I can counter with "Why does the above bolded keep coming up?" First off, it was within the timeframe that both parties had the ability to terminate. If I want to terminate a rental property agreement and have a timeline in order to do that, I can do so anytime prior to that date specified. And secondly, the city should have done their own due diligence and had all "climate and ROW issues" on the table from the beginning. That is either piss poor planning or they were trying to grease it through.

They were on the table from day 1. It's actually just a bad faith red herring from CSEC to redirect from their own bungling of this whole file.

Flames owners are waiting out the upcoming election to see if an UCP government will sweeten the pot.
And why not? A little Quid Quo Pro for all the scoreboard/rinkboard advertising in the past.

Calgary is that old IT guy who refuses to upgrade from Windows 7, but blames all the tech companies 'cause he can't use their products anymore.

We as a constituency of the wider Flames fanbase are almost irrelevant.
When the product becomes so bad the average non-fanatic stops going, thats when we’re in trouble.
We seem to be doing quite well in that regard despite the #### hole arena. But cracks appear to be forming. I don’t think the cause is the Dome. Its the boring on ice product. Barely tolerable when we had stars, it might be too unwatchable now that we are a team of joe averages.

Name them. I actually think the NHL is getting pretty tapped out for markets especially if they go expand to Houston/Atlanta. I don't think the Flames will leave though. Coyotes will be relocated before Calgary.

I think it is also because it is expensive. It is a 250+ night out these days for a pair. Taking a family is even more

If the Flames left and Calgary built a new arena, I think they would be pretty high up the list for a relocation, but good luck getting a new arena built with just the City paying for it.

First one of those teams has to move to Oakland before it relocates to Vegas. Seems like the logical thing to do. First the Raiders, then the A's... Vegas needs one more pro sports team to steal from Oakland to complete the trifecta.

Big talk for a guy whose team plays in a rink half the size of the Corral! lol
The Coyotes are canaries. No other teams are moving in the NHL before the Coyotes.

I think the most likely scenario is that the Flames will get the next mayor to bend over for an arena and stay.

We can't even make the playoffs in the weakest division in the NHL and the Flames are supposed to influence the next municipal election? lol They aren't China!

I don't think they have to influence anything. It is inevitable a 'business friendly' mayor gets elected and they'll be happy to push through an arena. Danielle Smith already wants it.
