Maloney said it in his first sentence " Its a sad day for me... Brad left us, he made the choice for his own reasons"

That was supposed to be quoted on E.E thread! Monday am I right!

Great news. Now I am excited.

Not sure about Johnny, but Tkachuk for sure having Sutter here played a role.
GM is partially responsible, how could he not be?

Tkachuk could have been on year 3 of an 8 year deal....they also had great years under Sutter. Gaudreau had his career season by a country mile.

To blame them leaving on Sutter is just piling on the guy that is left

Pascal has clearly shown the ability to build one hell of a strong AHL team.

I don't know if that can be translated to the NHL level?

Definitely something to think about though.

Regarding Tkachuk, Ottawa signed his brother for 8 years at $8.2 mil/yr with less impressive stats. They signed Stutzle to 8 years at 8.3mil/yr with similar stats. It happens. Both of those look great now.

Treliving's results were not good over the course of 9 years. I'm surprised people are romanticizing his tenure like this.
His brother was also given the captaincy and the face of the franchise.

With Darryl Sutter here that was never happening with Matthew.

If you want to blame anyone I would start with ownership for bringing Darryl back.

It really made me wonder why Kekalainen still has a Job.
I was expecting the see a stronger trend towards long term success but the Jets, Flames and Jackets are kind of exceptional for keeping the same GM in place with only a .500 playoff rate

As a player. Sutter is one of very few active coaches who have won it all.

Many Flames fans are trained to accept mediocrity and be risk averse. Treliving did some things well, and other things he didn't. The notion that a new GM could be worse is no much different than ownerships reluctance to do a rebuild.... because what if it doesn't work. Just accept being good enough, because risk is too scary.

Pretty easy to do right now, don't re-sign any of Lucic, Ritchie and other UFA's, trade guys like Lindholm who are unhappy for a 1st/player/futures and tell Darryl that guys like Pelltier, Coronato, Ruzicka are playing. This simple thing eases it for the new GM and Darryl either accepts or he can leave also.

I guess Lou Lamourello is a terrible GM. Let Tavares go for nothing because Tavares kept saying he was willing to stay (like Gaudreau). Fact is that Treliving had exactly one chance to trade Gaudreau - it was after the equivalent of a 70 point season (and a 67 point season the year before), when JG was telling him he wanted to stay. So tell me - what was the trade then?

As for Chucky, I have a brother just like Tkachuk has one. Surprisingly, we are different people. There is no doubt in my mind that Matthew Tkachuk wanted out and would have signed no more than a single additional year, to take him straight to UFA. Plus, not only was there Neal, but Treliving had Giordano, Gaudreau, Monahan all making significant money. Ottawa was completely free to throw a big number at Brady, and a Neal sized contract on their books wouldn’t have prevented it either.

I've heard that since KK and Burke left that the chain of command for hockey ops has pretty much been Treliving directly to Edwards.

Which is why it being Maloney and Bean on that stage today the issue.
If Murray runs things like we speculate, you really do need that strong person like KK or Burke in that role to insulate and protect your manager. Essentially their job is managing up to the owner and supporting your GM.

Yeah, he knows a thing or two about winning. Just ask him.

Kudos to Maloney for showing some emotion. I think we need a new owner.

Building an AHL team is sort of a strange concept though. The amateur scouting that fills the Wranglers is the Flames team. As far as I know so is the pro scouting which fills in the gaps.

I guess what I’m wondering is what an AHL GM does exactly.

Is that him, or is it on the back of a bunch of prospects. I know he filled it out with some career AHLers, but they don't really stir the drink. I know someone mentioned it in the Love Coach of the year thread, but having Wolf sure helps.

Brad chose to leave. This team is a dumpster fire and he is getting out when he can. Its an impossible team to recruit players to, and combine that with the meddling owners?

They will probably keep Sutter to make it look like this was their choice. But, its not.

Well, assuming you have actual info, this is not horrible news for those who want Sutter gone. A new GM might just still want Sutter out and their own guy in.
