Wonder if this GM hire is as interim as our captaincy being unoccupied.

I don't see it being a established name.
No point of Maloney as PoHO if you're going with an established name.
I think the blueprint here would be what happened with Burke-Treliving as PoHo and GM.
I still think it's a 90% chance it's Conroy.

To me that's for sure just that he thinks there will be a better opportunity in a better market (Easier to attract players to, no ownership involvement) this summer.

The guy just isn't very good. He kept betting the house on bad hands and kept losing, and now he left us with a non-playoff team that somehow has 18 players signed for next season with only 1.25M in projected cap space that's simultaneously missing five draft picks in the next three seasons, and we have a prospect pool that's ranked outside of top 20.
Not a good team, not a young team, no room to maneuver. No past success, no promising future, overspending and underperforming. That's the team Treliving built, and you don't keep a GM that delivers these kinds of results.
The guy talked a good talk but couldn't deliver. If there's an issue with Sutter, it's probably because Sutter can also look at the basic facts of the team and note that yeah, this is kind of a mess.

I quoted these two posts but I suspect this boils down to what happened last summer.
When Gaudreau left and Tkachuk said he wouldn't sign here that was a turning point for the organization. They could go full rebuild or reload. They obviously went in the direction they did and now have a three guys signed to long term deals into their late 30s. Was that a Treliving choice or an owners call on the direction?
And even if it was Treliving's call - very likely in 3 years or so, Kadri and Huderdeau will be cap albatrosses even if they do turn around next year. Might just see the situation as a good time to get out before the worm really turns.

From Gaudreau & Tkachuk, to Treliving, Backlund, and Lindholm and no doubt more inside the org, this has been the sentiment of the last year in Calgary

Futa would be full clown show hire. Might as well just bring back Feaster at that point.

Treliving is (a) wealthy, (b) pretty confident and (c) a guy with a lot of built in contacts. He doesn’t need a job and he knows his own value. There are three teams without a GM right now IIRC and more to come soon.

Recently Friedman speculated there was a lot of interest for Treliving inside and outside of hockey, in various roles. I’m sure Treliving has an idea about what he could do next. If he takes less money I’m sure he’ll be paid the difference in accordance with his deal with Edwards. This really really sucks if ownership chose Sutter over him.

It was time for a change, Brad needed to go. Sutter can stay another season, but he can go next year if the same happens. We need a good GM, Bob Murray, Craig Conroy etc. No Sutter !

Not likely. It's a small community and everyone knows what jobs are open and what may come open. I'm sure he will interview for the Penguins job but I can't see the Leafs putting out the feelers until their season is over.

Peak sadness for the Leafs is they finally get by the first round and then get swept.

Well, looks like we might get that rebuild you and I wanted. But this is definitely not how I preferred for it to all play out…..

It has to be rebuild.
This is a non-playoff team, in salary cap hell, and some key players don't want to be here anymore.
...this team is being forced into a rebuild. If they don't go with it, they're just outright stupid.

If I hated my boss, I’d probably submarine the season with some of the same decisions Sutter made.

The players wanting to leave was on Treliving. Gaudreau getting to UFA was on Treliving's watch. Tkachuck not being locked up long term - Treliving's watch. Huberdeau contract before he even laced up the skates - Treliving.
Backlund directly said he wants to win - Treliving's duty is to ice a contender. He didn't.
A lot of people acting like Treliving was a victim here.
