When he says he's willing to work with the coach and change how he plays it's scary because Darryl doesn't deviate from his style. The owners better be ready to pay a 50-60 point player under Sutter 10.5 million.

Toff is the best.
I wanted him ever since he was a rookie on the Kings. I'm glad the Flames went out and make it happen, and better yet, got him at the peak of his career.
His respect for Darryl and workman-like attitude undet the coach just makes me respect him more.
He won with D. So he has the wisdom to know that he isn't just a bitter old guy who punishes for no reason, unlike a few other vets who didn't take kindly to a coach that would actually push them.

It’s crazy the difference between reading others’ summaries of the interviews and listening myself.
1. good interviews from Zad and Weegar. Wish one of them had the letter over Lindholm at this point.
2. If Lindholm is going to sulk trade him. Don’t need him bringing the team down. I wonder if his situation is a good example of where the Flames need to start paying their RFA’s like other teams.
3. Backlund is pissed at never being past the second round and at this point in his career I don’t blame him. I’m a little shocked at the hate he is getting in this thread. He’s been a warrior for us and he said himself he’d love to win it all here but at 34 I don’t blame him for prioritizing winning.
4. Interesting comment from Backs about him and Tanev being co captains.
5. Didn’t mind Kadri’s interview, talked a lot about accountability, big talk big guy let’s see it on the ice next year.
6. I believe Huby when he says he will come back better next year. Marky sounds like he’s hopefully finally turning the corner too.
All in all I’m disappointed just like everyone else but it’s a good reminder not to take it so seriously! Gotta enjoy watching again.

I knew I’d forget something: I know none of the players are going to throw Sutter under the bus publicly but there weren’t any comments that made me raise my eyebrows. Wonder how much strife there actually is in the locker room vs fans and media alike trying to explain away the poor finish this year.

Where is this notion coming from that the Flames underpay RFAs? Go back at look at the player Lindholm was when he came here. He was offered and accepted a fair deal.

Yeah I don’t think there should be any sort of narrative that we underpay RFAs.
What I would say is that they’ve been too conservative on their offerings. When a market like ours has players like Johnny and Chucky seemingly willing to sign 8 year deals - just make the investment (like the Sens did). Yes, there’s risk - but if you’re willing to build a contending half-decade around players, lock them in for the full 8. Pay the extra, and don’t worry about trying to find ways to pay guys like Brouwer/Frolik/Neal etc.
Take care of the homegrown guys above all else.

I don't know anything about this stuff but I remember there was a player or agent poll of who the toughest negotiator was and it was Treliving as voted on. I guess it's that.
Edit, found it and Treliving did not win that - he just had one agent say it. So the above is incorrect.

I don't think it's that simple guys will want sign those deals.
I think we are going to see a movement more towards what Tkachuk did.
Young players will want options.

Firing the coach, in this specific instance, is likely the way to go. I can't see Huberdeau returning to the player we thought we were getting under Sutter.
|
I think with good goatending Sutter could get better results but with a couple key players wanting out the Flames need to look at the bigger picture.
I think a coaching change would be prudent, Had we gotten Sutter earlier on I think we would have had more success.

I’m not sure about that. We’ve seen (very recently) Brady Tkachuk sign for 7 years in Ottawa, Tim Stutzle sign for 8 years, Thomas Chabot for 8 years.

Here’s a quick recap of the whole season from me
Before the first game: it’s gonna take at least a season for all these new guys to gel- I’m honestly not expecting much. Next year will be much better
After the last game: god dam its the coaches fault for all of this

I said that it would take half the season to look respectable, and for all the negative things that happened this year (the goaltending, coaching, lack of timely scoring, the problems with the new guys fitting in,etc.), we still finished at 93 points.

You wouldn’t blame Calgary Flames forward Adam Ruzicka, relegated to spare-part status in the second half of this season, if he strolled into his exit meeting at the Saddledome and asked for a fresh start with a new organization.
Except that is apparently the opposite of what happened.
“The message was pretty clear — I want to be a future of this team, I want to play every game and I want to do the best that I can to help the team,” Ruzicka revealed afterward. “It was a great meeting.”
“I think everybody got mentally tougher from this season because it was just ups and downs all the time, frustrations, happy times too,” Ruzicka said during Friday’s end-of-season media availability. “Guys got mentally tougher, so I think that’s what you can take from it.
“It was a rollercoaster season. We’d be great and then, all of sudden, we wouldn’t play as good. It was just going up and down. It’s tough to play like that.”
“Pretty frustrating, right?” Ruzicka replied when asked to summarize his season. “When I played on the first line, I think I proved that I can do it. Obviously, it’s coaches’ or management’s decision where I play. All I think about is to actually play in the game. I don’t care how much I play. I just want to play.”
As he prepared to head home for the summer, Ruzicka was unsure if he’d represent his country at the upcoming world championship tournament.
But if you figured he’d also be unsure about whether he might be better off in another NHL city, guess again.
“First of all, I was drafted here. It’s the only team I’ve been on so far,” he reasoned. “So the plan is to stick around and be here as long as I can and help the team win. So that was the message. But who knows what is going to happen?”

Telling Stat #1: Jusse Saros led all goalies in WAR (wins above replacement) this season, winning 7.78 more games than an average, replacement-level goalie would have. Markstrom, on the other hand, finished 77th overall with a -0.52... meaning an average, replacement-level goalie would have won us half a game more than he did.
Telling Stat #2: Jusse Saros also led all goalies in goals saved above expected, saving 46.7 goals more than the amount that were expected to go in against him. Markstrom placed 77th overall in this one too, allowing 3.1 more goals this season than the total that were expected to go in.

No one saw how a contract like this plays out.
Now you have a bit of a blueprint.

The system worked, and the Flames were abysmally unlucky with posts and had sub-par goaltending. So they lost close games too often.
You don't even need metrics to see "what happened".
|
IMO there were four drivers that interacted and compounded to create this result. Honestly, when you think about, finishing 2 points out of a playoff spot is pretty impressive.
1) Subpar Goaltending
2) Bad luck
3) Lack of team finishing, highlighted in part by Huby's production totals down 60 points relative to last year, an NHL record.
When your most talented players have down years, finishing - defined by team shooting percentage - suffers more. More talented players have high than average shooting percentages and they also take higher shot volume. So when your best players aren't playing well, it brings down team shooting percentage a lot more than if your bottom-six players aren't playing well.
4) Losing when you're dominating games is frustrating, and it's probably even more miserable when you have to deal with Sutter and his intensity.

See, I don’t see Huberdeau’s game being neutered by the coach. I see him having a hard time adapting to playing sound defensive hockey as well as being a major threat offensively. I think he’s having a hard time putting them both together.
So many pundits and fans thought Gaudreau wouldn’t mesh with Sutter because he wouldn’t be a “ Sutter player”. That turned out to be complete garbage.
The two biggest problems with the Flames this year were goaltending, and the lack of a true top line. That’s really it in a nutshell. Secondary scoring was fine. If they get goaltending and a top line they’re tops in the division, or very close again.
However, I will say I don’t think Sutter is exempt from all blame in regards to Huberdeau. He definitely could’ve put him in some better spots to succeed and build his confidence. Especially on the pp.
