Somewhat weather related, but here at YYC we've got major travel disruptions to the west coast due to volcanic ash from an eruption in Russia a couple days ago. Every flight just cancelled. Just a heads up if you're flying west today (Friday) because we're not sure how this will go down in the morning.

Any idea if that ash advisory will continue to track east and eventually hit us?

Looks like quite a few near midnight and just after. So far this morning looks normal. Although Air Canada 201 is taking a very interesting YYC-YVR routing:

I think as long as they say "my bad" as they fly through it's all good.

That's all coordinated and handled by the flight planners, and the appopriate ATC's (Canada and US) would see it when the flight plan is filed.
I was just wondering if Air Canada chose to route south due to the volcanic ash advisory. At the same time WestJet flights YYC-YVR went the normal way through Canada.

I cut grass in my youth and did cut grass with snow on top in both July and August. I've tried to find evidence of that online (would have been somewhere between 1991-1995), but haven't been able to find anything. It must have been a localized thing where I happened to be so I can't back it up, unfortunately.

I feel like it definitely happened in the early 2000s. But I think sometimes our proximity to Banff and Canmore muck it up as well.
I do recall a few summers where in July and August where it was snowing up at the tea house at Lake Louise, but things were fine and dry in Banff and Calgary because I laughed at people in the early 2010s about this and told them they'd regret it. I seem to recall a few hikes in Canmore area where it would snow.
You'd have these short sporadic dustings of snow and a bunch of screaming girls in nothing but a t-shirt and short shorts. DoubleF on the other hand is no longer mocked for the large backpack with extra water, snacks and not one, but two long sleeves. DoubleF has to offer the windbreaker and sweater to the ladies for chivalry reasons... so it's burned into the memory that it snowed in July or August.
Those memories are created into the concept that in "our region" it can snow in all months, but then it might distort from "our region" to Calgary. I too keep thinking that snow in July and August must have happened half a dozen times in Calgary in the last two decades, but I can never find the evidence in weather reports as well.

When I see stuff like this I think... did you spend some time looking this up or did you just know off-hand? I bought my latest set of winters just this past October and I couldn't even tell you the brand name let alone anything else right now.

I'm a car nerd, I know off-hand because I pay attention to the tires I buy and research the crap out of them. I could name every single model/set of tires I've bought for my cars since 2008, though you'll soon see why that isn't very difficult:
'02 BMW M5 - Michelin Pilot Sport A/S+
'07 BMW 335i - Michelin Pilot Sport 2
'09 Aston Martin V8 Vantage - Michelin Pilot Sport 3
'14 Mercedes E550 Coupe - Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+
'12 Aston Martin V8 Vantage S - Continental ExtremeContact DWS06+ (C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER)
'08 Range Rover Sport SC - Bridgestone Potenza RE980AS
I was a long-time Michelin loyalist, but the Continentals have been stupidly impressively and don't come with the Michelin tax. The Potenzas were a good all-rounder for a vehicle that would be almost exclusively used on-road and needed decent cold weather capability.

It is definitely a car nerd thing. I have trouble remembering if my Kia is the LX or EX model every time I need to know for something

I feel like tires are an incredibly underrated or under-appreciated part of the vehicle for the vast majority of people. They make such a significant difference in ride quality and safety.
I know every winter tire I’ve ever had (because regardless of the vehicle I’ve always put on the same tire) and most of the “summers.” This is the first year I’ve really wanted to prioritize noise and comfort in the summer though (usually I just like what looks good and feels mean).

Literally, I'd say, the most important purchase for a vehicle yet most people are perfectly fine running some trash no name brand

Bingo. You can have a car equipped with 16.5" brake discs being clamped onto by six-piston brake calipers and the most brutal pad compound on the planet, and it won't make a lick of difference if your tires are made from recycled hockey pucks. Tires are very under appreciated by your average motorist.

Mount Pinatubo in '91 induced a slight volcanic winter I remember seeing snowflakes in the rain in late July and early August in '92. Played so much monopoly that year.
