You keep changing goalposts.
A. Saros does make up for his teams shortcomings more than Markstrom this year. So what? A goalie still shouldn't be expected to carry his team and the last time I looked, Nashville wasn't in the POs either.
B. This has nothing to do with softies. It has to do with the notion that any goalie, paid in the mid range of NHL salaries these days, is supposed to carry a team. Teams that rely on goalies heavily just don't do well. See Montreal and Price - good for one finals appearance in a weird season.

Ok I admit carrying is the wrong expectations but you keep sticking to Markstrom like is earning his paycheck. He has not for a long shot , not even recently.

All Markstrom needed to do this season was put up average goaltending and the Flames are comfortably in the playoffs, he did not have to carry this team.
Flames lead the league in one goal games, he makes one more save in 5 of those games and we are in the playoffs.

Something I've noticed since Markstrom & his partner had their baby. And this is PURE speculation based on timing and my own experiences. I've noticed his play has been more consistent and better since the birth of his child. I am SPECULATING that the pregnancy was difficult and challenging. When my wife and I had our youngest last year, we had the most horrid pregnancy. I was a walking zombie for 6 months until we were certain he was okay. I had a hard time putting on a brave face even for my oldest child. So PERHAPS... the birth of his healthy child, lifted a massive weight of his shoulders.
I know for myself, my work, relationships, and personal life suffered tremendously through those months of uncertainty and fear. Once we knew we were in the clear, the proverbial weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders too.

He is 8-6-2 with a .899 save percentage so technically better but still not good enough in my opinion. What we hasn't been is consistent, he's all over the map with equal good and horrible games, a few average thrown in.

Right. GSAA and GSAx are different things
Natural stat trick does report a clean GSAA
Moneypuck clearly reports goals saved above expected in its main goalie view
It should be correctly called GSAx, not GSAA
(And not only that, natural stat trick does it based on the filters. So if you filter by just the Flames, the average sv% it uses is only for Flames goalies. So if one goalie is -1.59, the other is 1.59)

Interesting wrinkle from Natural stat trick. Didn't know that.
And you've solved the difference between Moneypuck and NST I think!
But if you use moneypuck then yes you have xGA as a comparison and shot quality is taken into account.

Whats killed the team this year in my eyes, is how frequently they have to play from behind.
Markstrom has started 57 games.
Twice he's given up 4 goals on the first 15 shots, 11 times 3 goals on the first 15 shots, and 20 times 2 goals on the first 15 shots.
That's 33 out of 57 starts (54%), he's given up multiple goals in the first 15 shots against.
17 times (30%) (5 - 3 goals, 12 - 2 goals) he's given up multiple goals in the first 10 shots against.
It's got to be incredibly frustrating for the team in front of him to have to constantly battle back into games.
Then to top it off, when they do tie it up, or get a lead, there's the 47 goals against in the 3rd period and 7 against in OT.
1st period sv% = .876
2nd period sv% = .907
3rd period sv% = 0.895
OT sv% = 0.844

I don’t disagree, but, it also had to be frustrating for Markstrom that the first shot he would face after being cold for 3-5 minutes was a breakaway or long two on one to the best opposition players. In December I was begging them to let a few long shots through just so he could feel the puck.

That's a fair point for sure, there have been a lot of high danger chances against. The hope is that by investing $6M a year in a vezina calibre goalie, he bails you out on those chances more often than not. This year has been the opposite, where I feel Markstrom has been far below average on those opportunities.

Hindsight is 20/20 but imagine where LA would be if they hitched their wagon to Cal Petersen and/or Jonathan Quick the way Sutter did with Markstrom. No guarantee we would see the same results but that one move — sending Petersen to the AHL and playing Pheonix Copley — saved their season.
(Yes I know Markstrom has a no-move clause)

The team game plan simply can’t be to go ahead and allow MacKinnon a clear path to the net and know Marky’s got it.

Is that the game plan? Did they play MacKinnon 80 times this year already?

He is a garbage goalie and Flames need to help him develop an allergy to clothing or something so they can LTIR this bum for the remainder of his career.

Thanks again for the season Markstrom.
One of the worst seasons by a starting goalie in flames history I would bet. Bring back Berra! Flames would be in the same place, but at least have $5M to spend elsewhere

If this guy is between the pipes to start next season I'm probably taking a year off from this team.
Arguably the most frustrating performance by any Flames player ever.

Oh I can’t wait to see GM Sutter’s starting lineup next year.
Lucid and Ritchie on top 6, Markstrom starting goalie, Wolf and all the other players under 28 years old in the AHL or traded lol
