I’m losing whatever compassion and understanding I could muster for these ‘people’. Clearly society can either function well for most or poorly for all, and I don’t see much indication that the latter is the better option.

That was a weird example of a "maybe" place to move. Small American towns are increasingly becoming insane places with extremely high crime rates, where you can't earn or move away from the problem like you can in bigger cities. I literally watched a documentary that specifically focused on crazy drug use and crime in small Montana towns.

This isn't Calgary falling apart, 81MC, this is North America falling apart and it will only get worse.

You either need to earn enough to shelter yourself from it (as many CP level earners can) where your biggest complaint about the West falling apart is that you or your relatives amazon packages are being swiped, or accept that the West is falling before our eyes.

Those who can will stay away from downtown cores, stay in their nice suburbs and use businesses and amenities around them.

Why go to Starbucks in downtown Vancouver where a man was killed, when you can go to a neighbourhood coffee shop in West Van or Kerrisdale and feel safe.

Downtowns become worse and worse and people avoid them more and more.
Instead of being vibrant community hubs, downtowns become a place to go in only when you need and get out ASAP when you're done.

Oh, so we're on our way to becoming Detroit?

We need to be proactive enough to prevent that from happening.

1 room house cities (insultation, toilet, shower, bed, TV), 1,000 ish houses each. Big community centre in the middle with a single soup kitchen, policing, and social services. Only way in and out is a 2 hour bus ride. Bus can only be accessed by special permission. Labor camp opportunities to those with good behavior, can eventually earn enough for a ticket back to an actual city.

Only half joking.

We need compulsory medically-assisted treatment. Not just straight incarceration, we know that doesn't work.

Very depressing considering you said the strategy was firmly engaged... I would think that the first question to answer when coming up with a strategy would be "so where are we going".

Honestly, my actual answer is "the woods". I'm doing it. I have a spot cleared off for my place. If only building costs weren't astronomical, it's making things take forever, I've been singing this song for years now.

I agree. But I am starting to think that the best place for this medically assisted treatment is not down town in urban centres, but instead in remote, controlled areas.

There was another stabbing at Erlton Station overnight, too. Paying for parking downtown sucks but you honestly couldn't pay me to take the train right now.

Dude, totally. Warehouse them in Airdrie. I don't get why we don't implement this starting tomorrow. It blows my mind. And if Airdrie won't take them we cut off their water. Don't think I won't do it.

So you suggest we ship all the poors out of town to a camp somewhere, eh? Bold strategy, Cotton.

Is Airdrie really any different than downtown? They're only like 10 minutes apart [allegedly]

True, but it's gotta be a two-hour walk. Most of the meth heads I'm seeing would have a tough time lurching their way to Calgary from Airdrie and I don't think they have cars.

I'm glad my kids don't need to use transit, even to the university it will just be a bus ride versus the train.

Downtown is fine, just need to wear some body armour under my suit jacket to cover the vitals (only half joking).

They have some kickass bikes though somehow.

Default getting a little tired of the crack/meth heads

You really think it’s an unorganized group of hobos terrorizing our ctrain stations? Maybe address the ultra violent gangs? You think you are not gonna take that first hit of meth with a knife to your throat? Doubt you are gonna say no to that.

Go walk down Dermot Baldwin way and see if you escape that area without a new meth addiction. Explain to me how a newly homeless person or the working poor should just cross that area to access some simple services they need to survive. It’s like crossing no man’s land. You can’t even access the di without having to pass through that. The police don’t go there to clean anything up. How do you avoid the gangs and drugs when they literally surround the social supports you need to survive?

Kidnapping and forced confinement is not the answer here. Police presence and easy safe access to social services will go a longer way than shipping them out of your sight.

The street outside the drop in shelter. You know that’s a pretty violent gang area right? Ran by a gang called family first. What else would you like to know?
