Now that they've finished hiring 30 more transit officers, they announced the next step
The City of Calgary announces immediate actions to make Transit safer
Quote:
To increase riders’ feelings of safety and confidence in taking Transit, effective immediately we are deploying additional safety personnel:
-We have immediately doubled contracted security guards at stations from 8 to 16 and will triple to 24 by the end of April.
-We have increased overnight patrols, pairing police officers and community peace officers, from four nights to seven nights a week.
-We have redeployed peace officers from other operational areas to Transit areas of high concern along 7th avenue.
-We will proactively be sending peace officers when we observe suspicious behaviour or gatherings, to increase our uniformed presence at that location as a deterrent for escalation into violence.
We will continue to evaluate the impact of increased resources and will engage Council in discussion about further investment in May.
The City also recognizes the way we design, maintain and run our Transit infrastructure can have an impact on crime prevention. Some changes that will take effect immediately include:
-running announcements at stations indicating the area is under surveillance and for Transit users only
-increasing cleaning of CTrain stations
-creating a rapid response to repairing infrastructure damaged due to vandalism, etc.
-removing benches in identified areas to indicate a ‘no waiting’ zone to reduce loitering
3 people stabbed in the middle of downtown Calgary today - attempted robberies.
I've had enough of this ####. I'm at the point where I really don't give a flying #### what abuse, background, history, or addictions these people have. i want them gone from the city. Now I have to be scared to walk around for fear of being randomly stabbed by some looser? Enough is enough. Three innocent people have had their lives changed forever because of some low life. This clown will be released in short order and let off the hook because he was "under the influence". No consequences of any measure will come his way. Meanwhile, the three victims are left with physical, mental, and emotional scars that will last a lifetime.

My wife works right ####ing there. Could have easily been her out to get some lunch. This City has gone to #### and it sucks. From ‘I would raise my family here’ to ‘exit strategy firmly engaged’ in less than a decade.

I think our society in general is going to swing hard back towards more brutal forms of justice in the face of events like these. We are sparking matches to light a cigarette while sitting on an absolute mountain of black powder over here.

Yeah, I just got back from a trip and I was chatting with some chick from San Diego. Was telling her I was just there four years ago and how much fun we had and she went into a whole thing about how it's gone to ####, nobody can safely use transit anymore, downtown is a mess of people out of their minds, etc.
This is totally an everywhere problem.

Odds they were out on bail from other charges beforehand?
The question is if there was a citizen counsel on this that was familiar with the train and hanging with inordinate amount of users of meth, crack, fenty and the complete overtaking of transit (in many cities) what kind of action would they take?
Instead politicians come up with plans to spend more money to do a light push back and won't face the epidemic or systemic problems.
It's time to update the way we run our society, in that these politicians run on platforms and issue fake budgets at all levels and aren't addressing the problems the citizens know about. Once elected they are no longer beholden. The system is completely misdirected.
Sometimes hard choices have to be made, so that society can expect leadership, action and effect in their local communities. Yes, it is a problem on a major artery to have some guying stabbing and grabbing a purse.

Not where I live. I live in the CBD of a city twice the size of Calgary and 3x as many in the metro. There are shelters near our house and government housing. They're just like any other neighbours with the odd shouter that is out on the street for a few minutes, still quieter than living next to a family with a bunch of kids.
My buddy works as a cop in the area as well. Crime is down.

If the greater problems were easy or moderate or just kinda difficult to fix we'd probably fix them. Unfortunately they are really really really friggin difficult

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Thank goodness nobody was killed. After that Starbucks incident in Vancouver hearing the word “stabbing” is a little more horrific, if it could even become more.
