A handful of absolutely useless bystanders doing nothing but watching and filming the incident. Be careful surrounding this on Twitter, that video is awful and you don't know what you're seeing until it's too late. That poor guy.

I saw the video earlier... It shows more than just the aftermath.

I also walk by that Starbuck almost everyday getting on and off the bus to work. It was very eerie walking by the scene today on the way home. It's been totally cleaned up, but you could see everyone keeping their distance from the patio.

Jeez, that is graphic. And apparently random?

I missed your warning and scrolled up to read comments. I avoid seeing that kind of stuff because I know it's not good for mentally and almost had a full blown panic attack. It took me a bit to calm down.

So yeah, anyone clicking on the Twitter thread, do not scroll up. I am surprised that stuff is even allowed on Twitter.

Wish I hadn't seen video of it. Just awful. I go past that Starbucks every time I pick my wife up from the office and it is always busy.

What I was told was that the incident started after the victim complained about the other guy vapping. It escalated to the threat of a fight from the victim, and then a knife was pulled.

The victim's mother is the one stating he was there with his wife and child.

It's crazy how non reactive people are. One guy is just sitting at a table a few feet away. No one's running to or from the incident. The only person who seems to be reacting in any way is the person filming, so runs just, but just keeps saying "he stabbed him" over and over.

I'd like to think the non-reaction from bystanders isn't particular to Vancouver, but I don't really believe that.

I catch the bus home from work right next to this Starbucks which is one of their busier upscale locations in the heart of downtown - nothing rough about it or the neighborhood at all. Any given afternoon there'll be 20 people waiting to catch the bus within 30 feet of where this happened - all downtown office workers. There shouldn't really be any safer places to be.

Poor man. What a senseless and violent waste.

I like to crap on Vancouver as much as the next guy, but I dont get why you dont believe this?

Its not unique to that locale. It seems to be pretty standard group-think.

It's the culture here. It's typically cold and fearful of intervention/interaction. It struck me within days of moving here and that impression never left.

That's not to say there's no bystander effect or that those nearby didn't have a justifiable reason to be scared of getting involved, but as a Vancouverite the reactions simply leave me saddened but not surprised.

Okay, thats fair. I just didnt think that attitude was unique to Vancouver.

I thought that was a pretty common human trait.

No, it probably isn't unique to Vancouver, and I accept it's not really fair to judge people in the situation without knowing more.

It just aligns with my expectations is all, having lived here a long time. And perhaps I'd like to think things would have been different elsewhere.

The murderer was still just chilling in Starbucks at the time. Honestly, I would be afraid of the guy coming out and stabbing me if I tried to perform CPR or something. I remember one of the first aid instructors I had before said he was a paramedic in Miami, and if they were responding to an assault or attempted murder, they wouldn't do anything until the police got there first because of the risk of being attacked.

Man, I hadn't heard about this until reading here.
That is so horrible, in front of his poor family and young daughter too. I could see myself in the victim's position so easily; this city is getting scary.

Awful situation with a tragic end. But why could you see yourself in the victim's position? If what was written above is true, the victim may have started the altercation over the perpetrator vaping.

If true, whenever you choose to get in an altercation with a complete stranger, you're putting yourself in jeopardy.

Without knowing the full details, started the altercation could be simply been "hey, can you please smoke that a little further away from my kids".
I would say something like that to a random person smoking by my kid.

It seems unlikely to me that a guy with his wife and young daughter went out of his way to escalate the situation; but it's possible.

Asking somebody to not smoke or vape indoors is asking to start a knife fight or get murdered?

Is Vancouver truly so bad that this the expectation now, I guess the courts will just shrug their shoulders and be forced to let the murderer go?

Blaming the dead victim is an interesting take.

I was reading some comments on Reddit from people who were there, and they said that the murderer was standing inside at the window casually recording the guy dying with his phone. Apparently he even walked outside again at one point to look at him, and then went back in. I am not excusing the guy who was recording it and commenting on it like a jackass, but I can certainly see why no one was stepping up to perform emergency first aid on the victim with the murderer still armed and right there.
