Brutal.
The hardest hit demographic is single men 30-50, and indigenous are grossly over represented as you'd expect.

I saw the news conference and the public health officials looked as if they may have been crying...

And yet most citizens don't give a single **** other than if they're "in the way" of their day to day life.

I’m not super convinced that’s true, I just don’t think people know what they’re supposed to do about it.

I semi agree, except I don't see the empathy and calls to action when reports come out of thousands dying, I see the calls to action when groups of addicts become visible to the general public in an annoying/unsafe way.

And the undertone is not "we need to to something to help these people" it's "we need to do something about where they are and what they're doing in front of us while we're trying to live our lives in comfort and safety".

If I had my way we'd be trialing the **** out of various ideas that have worked/shown promise across the world, and spending more tax dollars on solutions. I do everything I can including having lengthy conversations with addicts much to the chagrin of people I'm with late at night, lol.

But they've always been excellent conversations, they're honestly mostly great people that have lost their way and have no control over what they're doing now. But I also sometimes give them some money after said conversations, so by Sliver's standards I'm literally a "dope", so I don't what the solution is, either. But I try to put in my time and be involved in the homeless world as much as I can.

It's really heartbreaking and shocking when you really sit down with these people, how many of them are 2-12 months removed from working and living in homes/apartments. Also, how many of them got hooked on harder drugs AFTER losing employment/housing, contrary to public perception that drugs always come first.

One of the most jarring quotes I heard from someone who was clearly a little high was "You either do drugs or don't when you join the streets, then you do drugs". It was so simple yet powerful. (I was also pretty drunk, so the exact wording may be off).

Edit: yes I realize my interactions are very ill-advised and not an option for most people. My point was just to get involved in ways that aren't just complaining that they're there and asking for their removal.

I mean there really isn't a debate that the current approach isn't working. The question is, when he says "we're going to reverse that policy", what specific policy or policies is he actually talking about, and when he says "we're going to replace it with recovery and treatment", what does that mean?

He talks about the Alberta approach - at a very high level, the addition of 4000 new treatment beds under Jason Kenney - but it's not like it's "problem solved" here either.

Like a PP government will increase spending on treatment and recovery and voters like Yoho will be all of the extra taxes.
Sounds realistic.

The plan is to have federal overreach into provincial jurisdiction?

How reprehensible.

Good thread about the games PP and his friends are playing. I guess there is no money to be made in safe supply and decriminalization.

Very sad. Man was murdered at a Starbucks in Vancouver after getting stabbed. The man's wife and young daughter were apparently with him at the Starbucks but that's only based on comments.

Don't scroll up from that tweet. There's a very NSFW and graphic video of the aftermath. This tweet itself though doesn't show anything graphic.
