The strawmen are strong with you. It's like you read every one of my posts and attempt to cast it in the darkest light possible, going so far as to put words in quotes that I didn't say. As if pointing out that racism exists and is not going to be solved in this conversation is somehow a controversial position worthy of a "yikes", then pretending I dismiss others' experiences of it and insinuating I contribute to it. Ya, you know what? If that's how you are going to continue, you can get bent. I don't need you attempting to besmirch me and paint me as racist.

You wrote regarding the situation of Chinese people that "China is making them the target of racism", thereby attributing blame for sinophobia to China instead of the sinophobes.
Hi, Jewish guy married to a Chinese ex-pat here.

It's perfectly reasonable to oppose anti-semitism and acknowledge that Israel's actions as an apartheid state contribute to anti-Jewish sentiments worldwide.

Same goes for China. Sinophobia affects my wife and child (more times than I would have expected during COVID especially), and bigots should be called out as the backwards moronic #######s they are. This is not mutually exclusive for telling the Chinese government to go #### themselves for being genocidal #######s that are fingering the buttholes of Western governments and provoking things like RCMP investigations.

Two things can be simultaneously correct.

According to the report, she said that both the media reports and the RCMP investigation are causing racism. She then said the espionage cases themselves have caused her to feel "division". The second guy said his problem is that the investigation might cause people to wonder, about any normal asian-Canadian person walking down the street, whether they're under investigation by the RCMP.

So, yes, they did say "something of the kind". The quote in the headline itself that "the investigation is bringing fear to them" is an accurate characterization. Fuzz's response is apt.
The reporter attributes to the organization the view that the cases are causing experiences of fear and racism in the Chinese community.

The woman interviewed said she has felt division in the way people have treated her after the espionage case, yes. She didn't say that the investigation itself being conducted made her feel othered or discriminated against. It was the response of people who learned about the case in the media that made her feel division.

Yes, the guy expresses worries that people walking down the street will be suspicious of regular Chinese people and that is upsetting for him, but his opposition to the investigation was that he sees it as unfounded and that they have not given any reason for it. He clearly feels that people are viewing the Chinese community differently on the basis of an investigation that he sees as unwarranted. He did not say that he opposes fair investigations.

So, the actual specific things they express opposition to are, respectively, how the public treatment of the investigations has resulted in discrimination, and discrimination resulting from an allegedly unfounded investigation as he sees it.

The only one in the report whose views could be construed as opposing an investigation taking place was the guy, who may be construed as opposing it because he sees it as unfounded.

This, I agree with. The only thing I would say is that while actions of Israel, China etc. can contribute to negative sentiments, no country on the other side of the world is making anyone in the US or Canada act in any racist or bigoted ways. People need to be given responsibility for their choices in how they treat others. I dislike the actions of many governments around the world, but I don't choose to view people from anywhere negatively on the basis of what their government has done if they have nothing to do with it.

So, statements that attribute the responsibility to China, Israel, Iran, Russia or wherever for racism or acts of bigotry towards people from those countries are problematic. The actions of the countries can be fairly attacked and criticized, but racism or bigotry here or in the US is a problem with the choices and views of people who hold those ignorant beliefs and act in those harmful ways. No far away country is making anyone racist. If anything, it is ignorance and fear mongering or hate in a person's current environment that encourages racism and bigotry.

A lot of the xenophobia is similar to the Red scare. China is effectively putting in the minds of western citizens that anyone could be a covert operative, through the police stations, lab techs being expelled, weird directives to foreign students and other espionage nonsense. It's not helping, that's for sure.

The best defense for general moronic bigotry seems to be English or French fluency. Hearing a target of racism sounding exactly like the bigot would be demoralizing to them.

20 years after the Iraqi invasion, everyone should watch this video. So much death, so many broken men, and all for nothing. The fact that George W Bush and Dick Cheney get to live out their lives in peace with zero repercussions for their evil acts is shameful

Based off a lie to the international community to boot. Rules-based order.

did anyone else notice that the opiod epidemic started immediately after the US gained control of afghan poppy fields? Thats another endless wave of death and societal poison that can be directly attributed to that war.

Also, needs to be remembered how powerful a role the NYT itself played in backing and selling the lies the illegal invasion and occupation were based on.

Opioid addiction in the North American is as old as the first Europeans who came over.

Plus I thought India and Tasmania processed poppies for the pharmaceutical industry. Isn't Afghanistan more about street heroin? Plus, the US tried (and failed - classic war on drugs crap) to curtail opium exports from Afghanistan.

I know Matata is typically the source of reliable and accurate information on this site, but I think he's a little off in this case.

The seeds (lol pun) for the opioid crisis were laid in the 90's. There are enough legit takes on why the war was a disaster, we don't need to invent more.

It goes right back to the roots of the sport.

There have been lots of really interesting academic work relating the war in Iraq to a European tradition of conquest in Asia. Themes of religion, "barbarism", and economic gain.
