I cannot out-think those who do not think. You are a weasel, as Minnie put it.

Letting him buy his way out of this seems distasteful. Community service is probably a better option. He should spend every Saturday, for the next six months or so, helping out at a facility where people have mobility problems.

Accusing other people of being emotional because they’re presenting a perspective you either can’t or refuse to see is pretty childish. I wouldn’t call defending Briere and dismissing/mocking the realities disabled people face as “grounded,” but you’re welcome to take your ball and run home because your take didn’t land the way you wanted.

I sincerely believe you (and others) would benefit from putting aside the fact that you instinctively relate to the dumb dude-bro, and just put in a little bit of effort into relating to a disabled person. It’s not really an emotionally charged conversation, it’s really as simple as understanding the reality that a wheelchair is more than a chair to a disabled person. You shouldn’t be struggling this hard with it.

Agree! But he still has to pay for the damage to the wheelchair.

I was fairly certain Daniel Briere would release some kind of statement addressing this. I doubt he felt he had much choice given his role.

As a person who struggles with progressive MS daily...There is no "jackpot" here. Give me $100k, and I'd throw it right back at you just as quickly if it meant I could raise my three children without MS.

If someone snapped the cane I got from my great grandpa, I'd feel pretty shaken up even if it was repaired and I also received a "jackpot" on top of everything. It seems like some have a very shallow view of what disabled individuals deal with daily. Just throw some money at em' and everything will be just dandy. Does money help? Sure! But disability has shown me that there are far more important things in this life...and also things I took for granted.

I know I'm singling your post out, but I'm not trying to attack you. Some things are just less simple than they seem. I'd personally prefer my life continuing onward without a rude interruption, over a gofundme.

My mom is in a wheelchair, and something as seemingly innocuous as a cushion can cost upwards of $600 alone. Those are highly customized mobility aids, and damaged units can take months to replace.

As far as "jackpot," what is the monetary value of dignity?

The takes of the sensible majority here are entirely grounded.

Not too "emotionally close", just well in touch with their common sense, and capable of recognizing when compassion is warranted.

You don't need to be have friends or family members in wheelchairs to know without a shadow of a doubt that the kids actions were wrong and inexcusable.

As Pepsi said, your mindset is rather perpetrator-focused, and lacks empathy for the victim's outcome (just an observation). Maybe you did some stupid things and you're attempting to dissect the incident to determine how this isn't that egregious due to lack of malicious intent, because maybe it's resonant with how you ####ed up in a similar way at some point in time due to similar absent mindedness?

This is just me spitballing, not judging. And we've all ####ed up. The point is, as we grow that we take the wisdom and lessons of those #### ups and hopefully develop a sense of empathy for our neighbors through those #### ups, even if their life circumstances are notably different from our own. I think it's important, because we provide the attitudes and behaviors that kids like this end up modeling when they grow up.

Maybe watch a video on the life of someone in that girl's situation and help yourself resonate with it better. It can only serve you and expand your awareness. I find, that when you're butting heads with this many people, that it's a good sign to retreat, reflect and educate yourself on a different perspective.

Shocking lack of understanding by OutoftheCube in this thread, and even worse with a proclamation of hitting the jackpot because of $6k gofundme.

Great responses to the ignorance, though.

Seems like a no brainer from a PR perspective.

First off, a sincere face to face apology. Replace the chair with the same or better. Compensate the woman for the time she'll spend without her chair, not cash, maybe help make her home/work/vehicle more accessible to give back the time she lost. Lastly do some sort of volunteer work with the disabled. Do all of this before a court tells you that you have to.

What they will do? probably apologize a couple times though the media and throw some money at the problem.

"hit the jackpot" yeesh

Saying the lady "hit the jackpot..." -- as if disabled people sit around all day hoping people feel sorry for them, to get money from them.

This person wanted to enjoy a Saturday night out with friends, like anyone else would. Only to have that sense of normalcy shattered by a wanton act of callousness.

May be Carson Briere should start up a gofundme page to raise fund to repair his reputation, the "oh poor me, I'm just a college student and every one is ganging up on me. And people saying I have to pay for the damage to the wheelchair? Where am I going to find money for that?" When the gofundme page is set up, Outofthecube can go pay into Carson's jackpot.

Sullivan's Pub in Erie, PA. The dance floor is upstairs, which is why we see people holding drinks going up the stairs.

Ironically, across the street from a hospital.

Since when did getting 6k become the jackpot?

Seems like a few people here have never had a family member in a wheelchair and have to provide care for them.

The analogy someone used of having someone's legs taken is spot on.

6k is definetly the jackpot, hell you could get a brand new wheelchair with that kind of money...

From what I understand, you're still several thousand dollars short of a new chair with 6k. Some jackpot.
