Here's the thing...I do think there is a strong chance that this season makes Huberdeau a better overall player.
We are all frustrated with his production...but I do truly see a guy trying to learn to also play a more complete game, and I don't think we can complain about Huberdeau's "buy in", IMO he's bought into the team system.
His defensive effort and attention to detail is better than it's been in his career IMO.
At times he's been more physical, and has used his big frame better than he has prior in his career.
The problem has been he just hasn't been able to play that quick passing game that he's good at...in general players on this team all tend to hold on to the puck too long, and I think his skating has looked a bit labored at times (he did have a lower body injury early in the year).
This is actually the highest xGF% share of Huberdeau's career (54.6%), and some of his best xGA metrics of his career. But the lowest PDO of his career (shooting + save percentage).
I think if the Flames were to move assets with him to try to move that contract this offseason it would be a mistake. He was a top 5 point producer in the league over a 4 year stretch for a reason, and not because he's a support player.
