GST is paid by end users and increased prices result in a much higher tax revenue to the government. That's not a "government give business a break"
It's the end users who are paying the higher food costs. When it comes to shipping costs and how they have exploded, items are being marked up across the board a lot more than this 7% inflation everybody keeps talking about.
A pallet of an item that retails for $1.99 at $125 a pallet doesn't get marked up to $2.13 when the shipping costs go to nearly $500. It's getting marked much higher.
If we really had 7% inflation, we really wouldn't have everybody struggling. We have restaurants charging prices of 25% + over last year.
None of those have to do with taxes though. You are basically saying that companies across the entire supply chain have been able to use the excuse of inflation to increase prices beyond what was needed to capture greater margins. Cost goes up by 2% and the supplier marks it up 3% so on and so forth. How would a tax break help with that?
Look here you. You've been called a lot of things but you are not a Porn Star!
Well not anymore; that was when he was in Copenhagen.

I re-read my post and I had worded it poorly. I am referring to GST, PST etc. Not income taxes or corporate taxes specifically for the grocery store sector or anything.
If we were to reduce the tax burden for families at the grocery store, that would go a long way of actually reducing the cost. For a lot of people, $1 saved is $2 earned.
I see it in my store and with friends with families. The struggle for groceries is real for a lot.
As a side tip, I do recommend people that people do grocery shop on some items at smaller stores as they may be surprised at the quality vs price. In a lot of ways, the meat at a local butcher or meat process facilities, the bread and baked goods at small bakery, the shoes at a locally owned store etc are very well priced.
The big dogs like Superstore, Walmart etc have mountains of inefficiency sometimes and since Covid and inflation has made the cost higher, people are naturally assuming they are always cheaper and driving more and more business there. They don't need to take a margin cut but the little guy may be cutting margins or not increasing them by their normal margin because they require the volume.
The 'existential threat' line is practically a meme right now in the US and Australia. I've never seen this level of alarmist language before wrt China. It reminds me of pre-Iraq war days. In a hearing yesterday down south one representative said the US is already at war with China now, in the last intelligence hearing another representative talked about the best defence being a good offense regarding conflict with China, meanwhile in Australia there have been super alarmist statements about Australia's need to prepare for war with China in three years, to accelerate a nuclear program, and even stuff about a draft.
Canada obviously is warranted in wanting to prevent elections influence and other things that violate Canadian laws, but I hope Canada doesn't get caught up in the kind of rhetoric going on in the US and Australia. There seems to be a full court press from some conservative circles to motivate the public for war in both of these other countries, which I sincerely hope Canada does not end up in.

^That’s because it’s true and now the west now knows it. There will be a hot war over Taiwan before the end of the decade. China cannot assume their global ambitions with the US controlling the pacific and demographically they will start to implode in 10 years.

Brought to you by the same mind that gave us "There's a reason why the dollars and cents crowd are lining up behind the UCP."

I dunno, I kinda think it’s inevitable China invades Taiwan. All they have to do is wait until the Brookfield semiconductor manufacturing plant in Texas is complete and operational and then boom, Taiwan is theirs. US won’t go to war over it when they have their goods secured.
Maybe I'm stupid but what is the "dollar and cents" crowd? Is that referring to poor people? But then why would they be lining up behind the UCP when it be against their interests?
You should be better than this. If you disagree then tell me why I’m wrong without taking pot shots.
You didn't write much, but just reread it and consider even the internal logic of it. You say this is a country that can't realize ambitions because of the US, and that it's a country that's going to experience a demographic collapse within ten years, but this country is an existential threat to Canada??
Then you post a video that points out how China is actually surrounded by the US, how critical waterways for trade around China are controlled by the US, and how China is dependent on a supply of chips from Taiwan (which obviously has a good relationship with the US and which would be phenomenally difficult to invade).
That video basically points out conditions that make the US a far greater existential threat to China than China is to any country in the West.
Everything you provided actually argues against the claim you were making.

Wow, John McKay said something and nothing…….if the government wants us to take china serioisly, then they need to show they are serious about rooting out the issues. I feel like all they have done this far is window dressing.

Yes I don’t disagree that the US is the power standing in China’s way of being the primary world power controlling world trade which is their ambition. Now with China’s population in decline this will likely be the last decade or two they will have the ability to do anything about it. Xi himself has indicated the re-integrating Taiwan needs to happen before his reign is over. It just seems highly likely China would make a move for Taiwan this decade, which would kick off a war with the west.

I hope the US keeps this up frankly. We have seen how China honors commitments, namely Hong Kong. Ripping it up when it suited them, because were weak and their strong.
To have an uncontested power like that, and has no shared interest with Canada the way The US does. We would be run over far worse than anything you see today. Add in those police stations would become permanent and public. Or else we will be punished with trade or otherwise.
I cannot see how any Canadian would want that happening.
