As a fan, I think there's two paths the Flames can take that I would be okay with.
One is to start the rebuild now. Start to trade off the 2024 UFA's and get the ball rolling sooner rather than later.
The other is to do absolutely nothing. Come back next year with largely the same team and hope that your goaltending can rebound. It's not unheard of. If it still isn't working next year you can start the rebuild then.
They shouldn't be buying this year, but they don't need a total firesafe either. There's two paths in front of them. Pick one, be open about it, and commit to it. The worst thing they can do this year is spend assets to try salvage this year. It's likely lost, so adjust accordingly.
If they make a trade, I would be okay with a "hockey trade". I don't want them spending assets.

Third option is to sell high on one or two of the older soon to be UFAs. Cap squeeze will set in this offseason as its likely only to rise 1 million so you swoop in and try to flip those acquired assets for a good younger player for cheap.
Stay competitive but get younger and not let UFAs walk for free.

This is where I am at. There is no need to throw in the towel at this point. See if they rebound next year, and if they don't, then you have a bunch of assets that you can move.

I don't think this is really the comeback you had in mind.

I don’t know if there’s anything to look at that makes the player appealing.

It would be so flames to make no player personnel changes when we truly despise the makeup of the team and have no players we like..

Re: Ritchie/Anderson. Brad has always had eyes on this type of player and it predates Sutter. Remember the Niklas Grossman saga and the controversy over picking up Bollig and Engelland.
People used to blame these sorts of acquisitions on Burke lol

Add to that a pretty limited market for his rental players and unknowns for his 2024 UFA class and it's a pretty tough set of decisions.

Yeah if the ownership is win now, you may not want to move guys with 14 months until their contracts expire.
End up with cap space and no targets to replace them.
Personally I'd hope they see it as a change to supplement Kadri and Huberdeau with young assets that will be here with them altering the core.
If you don't see all 6 back in 18 months move the 2 you deem least likely.

The Flames have no big UFAs this summer, and a whole wack of them next summer. So the wait it out until the end of next year plan makes a lot of sense. A major risk is that Flames ownership starts giving out massive extensions to everyone this summer, securing the longstanding mediocrity.

The other piece to why the Flames are better than their record is the record in OT. In regulation the Flames are pretty good considering their goaltending and Huberdeau not producing.
But selling 1 player makes sense as the cap will probably not allow to keep everyone anyways. It would be nice to sell high on someone for once.
If Toffoli doesn't move, will he have a better year than this year?
Throw in that we have some AHL guys ready, I'd just love to see 1 sell trade. Maybe guys like Lewis too if we have a buyer.
