Could make an absolute killing selling off some of these guys with a year left
Cash in, man. It's the perfect year to do it. Even if you don't get Bedard (highly unlikely anyways), there's still a fantastic talent pool to choose from
Would like to see us drafting 3 times in the first round
If Jeannot gets a draft class, Backlund easily lands you a 1st+ right now

I’m one of them. I think they will re-tool but no way they commit to a rebuild. I’m expecting hockey trades like Hamilton

I hope Tre realizes that we will likely need 32 points to make it to 98 points, which is what we will likely need to make it into the playoffs. That means we can’t lose more than 5 games, so we have to go 15-5-2. No way we do that.

I can not understand trading player like Lindholm, Toffoli, Tanev or Hanafin to build a team around Huberdeau. If that happened, Huberdeau's best before date would be long past before we reaped the benefits. His best before date may have already happened. Hopefully, if we do trade these players it's not to build a team around him.

Lindholm at 4.85 is great. Lindholm at 50% retained is unbelievable. Lindholm at 1.2125 is the deal of the century.
|
Exactly. Retaining on one of the guys on already great contracts opens things up to bidders that would otherwise be retrained by the cap

Question is, will the 2024 pending UFAs re-sign.
If they feel they might be difficult to resign,
In my virew, they should be moved this summer

What we really need is some late 20 first round picks so we can draft some more Poiriers, Klimchuks, Nemiszs, Pelechs, or Chuckos.

If player development has taught me anything it’s that if it didn’t work before never, absolutely ever, try anything again. Sign UFAs, keep them until their contracts end, lose them for nothing. That’s the path to success

It's more like Huberdeau is not being moved, so who do you move to build a team with. You hope that Huberdeau is (a) having a down year and not hitting as wall, and (b) his actual decline is lower and more like a Gio, Thornton, Ovie, etc.

I think it’s the same kind of situation as Dallas has been in for a while. They have been stuck with Benn and Seguin’s contracts (as we are now with Huby and Kadri), so they just built around them.

I’ve been saying for a year and a half now they should rebuild. Never works from scratch but they should put three or do solid seasons to doing it.
I’m not sure if it’s a dismissive crowd. The Flames seem to have been unwilling to do it right in the new NHL where getting a high pick a couple years is needed. So the crowd isn’t dismissive, it’s the organization who refuses to do it.

Or maybe, just maybe hear me out, move them when higher first round spots are in play.

In hindsight, the Hamilton trade was probably a mistake - drafting any one of Barzal, Chabot or Connor would’ve been more useful long term.
|
They likely want to keep their own cap flexibility which is minimal so I am not sure they want dead money on the cap next year for retention. I do not think the flames will sell with a vision of slow build they will want to retool on the fly and having picks AND cap flexibility is the key. Cap is minimized if they have several million retained.
I don’t think the Hamilton deal was a mistake it landed the team Lindholm and Hanifin and if the Flames are smart they can keep that trade tree growing by flipping those guys.
I am not sure about going on another 8 year deal for a guy turning 29 next year and turning 30 in year one of the deal. So Lindholm should be shopped.

Dreger suggesting action heating up on Parayko, and has been covering the Oilers today. Timing lines up. Hmmm

I’d rather get late 1st round picks for expiring UFA’s even if the picks don’t pan out than lose those expiring UFA’s for nothing

Of course why didn’t anyone else think of that. Trade our guys to bad teams who want to give up high picks in a draft predicted to be great, it’s so simple.
Hold everyone until the off-season and hope bad teams want to overpay for guys. It’s a different plan but I can get on board.
