It's not like 2004 was the culmination of a rebuild. Both their goalies went down and they lucked into a Hall of Fame caliber goalie by trading a 2nd and going on a Cinderella run. And then the game changed.
They've been re-tooling for 20 years now.

It should be considered a rebuild for sure - but was also a very different era where drafting was less of a certainty.
From 1996 - 2003 they drafted no better than 6th and no worse than 13th. Over those 8 drafts they made 8 1st round picks, and 13 second round picks.
They never really bottomed out - but wasn't because they weren't rebuilding they just never seem to be able to suck to that level.
But the trades for Iginla & Regehr happened in that time too - and Morris, Begin, Lydman, Betts, Saprykin, Kobasew, Lombardi, Phaneuf, Nystrom were all drafted through those years.
If Fata doesn't bust and Tkaczuk doesn't have concussion issues it's probably looked at different too.

I think he is right...i recall that both sides definitely tried to do a longer term contract before the bridge was signed. Not sure if the problem was trying to stay under Gio's "max" for the team or what. But it seemed like Tkachuk was open to the long term deal back then.

The selling off of MacInnis, Nieuwy, Roberts, Fleury, etc. was needed as they couldn't afford to keep them. Getting pieces like Iginla, Regehr, Savard, etc. were necessary to take the Flames into the future. It might have been an era of no salary cap and the Flames were forced to sell, but I would still consider those years a 'rebuild', yes.

Sens were in on him too, even though they aren't likely a playoff team this year

Why 6? That's completely arbitrary.
Bottom line is if the team wants to try and compete next season they need good players. They could flip Toffoli for futures, but then they are going to need a scorer like him for next season. How do they get that?

I think he was telling the truth with this comment, If memory serves me correctly that was when we swapped Neal for luc, and the retention on the Lucic contract gave us the space to sign Tkatchuk to his bridge deal without have it make a trade. Had Tre signed him to an 7 or 8 year deal it would have had to be more then 7 and somone would have had to be traded.

What the actual hell is going on with Treliving.

Salary would have to go the other way (Puljujarvi). I think for it to happen Nashville would have to retain a couple M at least. 2023 1st, 2023 2nd, 2024 2nd, Puljujarvi. Nashville retains half? Not sure if that's close or not.

This! Though Treliving heavily influenced by ownership's wants...
They're delusional as to the state of the team...leads to poor decision making...The forecast calls for mediocreness, sadly.

What a terrible contract; Parayko, Josh Anderson, Karlsson, why would any GM take these on, unless they are exchanging bad contract for bad contract (Lucic/ Neal deal).

I'd love to see the Flames move a single piece out at the Trade deadline. Nothing Crazy. But try and prepare for next season because making the playoffs is starting to look difficult.

Selling would mean potentially more young players stepping in
They have driven the bus for this team lately. I don't think your chances would be significantly worsened

I have a hard time pointing out one player who is holding this team up. I know Backlund has been amazing, but no one should be off limits.

Yep, I'd think we could still make a push with a few bodies out the door and some younger replacements.
Similar to when we traded Glencross in 2015 and still pushed into the playoffs.

Wonder if Lewis would be a good add for a team at the deadline. Has performed admirably in his role, wouldn't cost a lot, would be terrific depth for a contender. Duehr should remain with this team full-time, IMO.
