Yup. I hope Toronto wins the cup. A lot of long term suffering for the fans. This us by far their best team to win with in a long long time.

The Flames don't have anyone of value on an expiring contract, unless there's a team that wants to add Lucic's veteran presence for a run. If there is, the return for Lucic won't be anything special and you'll probably need to get a third team involved for cap retention too, making the Flames haul likely a late round pick.
It' not the return for Lucic that would be as important as opening up a spot for one of the young Wranglers on the Flames.

This is a good trade for the Leaf's, they bring in a really good faceoff guy

Who has won a cup, and will bring leadership

Will add another dimension for the Leaf's who are clearly going for the cup.

My guess they will also acquire a defenseman.

I wonder if o’reilly will take 50 games to settle? New team and all.

I don’t know much about this draft quality, but I hear it’s good. To see the cost of that 1st do I cast my eyes down the 2003 draft focusing on bottom of 1st round and top of 2nd? Because that is too much for Ror.

I doubt they can get by Boston and they traded away good picks.

They do have a fall back if they’re brave enough. If this doesn’t get it done you might as well move Matthews to stick the cupboards again.

Less pressure when you're stepping in to a reduced role with a team loaded with existing stars. But you know that.

Does Minnesota have to actually pay O'Reilly any money? $500k+ of real money seems like a steep price to pay for a 4th round pick.

Does it? It’s not even min salary of your bottom roster player.

I'd rather have the $500k. Do they actually have to pay?

Base salary is $1M this year. So it's 25% of that pro rated to roughly 1/3 of the season. It's like $75k

I'm no cap expert, but this is how I understand it.

O'Reilly's cap hit is for $7.5 million. His actual number paid to him this season is $6 million with $5 million already paid as a bonus. This means $1 million in base salary for 82 games. His team (St. Louis) has already played 54 games or 66% of the season. That means that 34% of his base salary of $1 million still needs to be paid, or $340,000. The Leafs pay half ($170,000) and Minnesota pays half($170,000).

So, Minnesota pays out $170,000 in real money and $1,875,000 in a cap hit and gets a 4th round pick.

It cost the Flames a first rounder for Montreal to take Sean Monahan and his $6,375,000 cap hit with $6,000,000 in actual salary.

Edmonton wants to make a trade for Erik Karlsson who has a cap hit of $11.5 million for this season and four more. He has something like $666,667 in actual dollars to be paid out for this season and $39,000,000 over the next four seasons.

They expect to have San Jose pick up half of those dollars and perhaps another party pick up a quarter of them?

For the third party, picking up a quarter of Karlsson's salary:
For almost $10,000,000, of salary out over four years ($2.5 million/year) and $11.5 million in cap hit over four seasons ($2.875 million/year), would be valued at about 2 first round picks, based on these transactions.

San Jose taking on half of Karlsson's salary would be $19.5 million in real dollars and $5.75 million/year in cap space. That's more than 3 first round picks worth of value.

So, if the Oilers traded for Karlsson with San Jose taking on half the salary and another team taking on a quarter of the salary, it is going to cost more than 5 first round picks just for the salary retention - and now the Oilers need to add for the value of the player.

How does this trade make any sense?

Feaster’s interpretation was correct, and they actually changed the wording because of it from the MOU to the CBA.
