You would think after the Hiller era, the Elliot fiasko or Mike Smith' nosedive they have learned their lesson and won't be signing any more 30y+ UFA goalies for big money contracts. But no. Lets sign Markstrom, a guy with like two elite season in lifelong NHL career. Mostly played for non-playoff teams with low pressure, decent individual numbers but mediocre win /lose ratio. Let's sign that guy for freaking 6 million dollars a year. Surely nothing can go wrong, right?

Now you have this situation when you fight for 8th playoff spot. Your best goalie in the ranks cannot go up because the starter guy sucks, but has NMC and the backup does well, in fact is the reason why Flames are still in contention, but it's his spot that is in question now. All because of this management.

What a terrible, terrible management.

Delusional board thought they are going "all-in" signing Markstrom with only 2 remaining seasons for Gaudreau and Tkachuk. But why didn't they protect Giordano at expansion draft then? I mean, that should be a no-brainer, if you want to win a cup within next 2 seasons, you keep your franchise dman and captain, right? No.... And you don't even go all-in for a goalie. You just sign the most expansive UFA on the market, give him a NMC and call it a homerun. Sorry but my brain hurts thinking about it. If you wanna throw 6 million at goaltending and win the cup, atleast trade for one. Sell farm if needed. Just not this half-ass joke of a solution all over again. Like how many times do we have to see this happen?

I hope this is the last time and Wolf is the next Kipper. Found a gem at 7th round, what a miracle pick. Call him up. But if you screw even this one Flames, I am done with you.
There's a lot wrong with this but not protecting Gio was absolutely the correct move.

You can be done with the Flames sooner, it's OK by me.

Actually in hindsight the correct move would have probably been to protect 4 forwards, 4 dmen and a goalie.

Leave Monahan exposed and hope that they take him.

But that is with the benefit of hindsight and that we had to spend a 1st to move Monahan.

4 forwards? So Lindholm, Tkachuk, Gaudreau and Mangiapane? So long Dube, or Bennett, or Kylington I think.

I don't want to derail this thread, but something tells me the way they treated Gio played it's part in Tkachuk's and Gaudreau's decision making. Maybe I am wrong but to me it's not a good look to let him walk like that when you at the same time try to pretend to be a contender.

Yeah, but as was said before, the alternative was exposing Monahan, who Gaudreau was probably a lot closer to than Gio.

Everyone was saying expose Gio. He was slowing down a lot and easily 4th on the depth chart.

It was really a no brainer and few were suggesting otherwise.

Honestly if the team wasn't so risk averse they would call up Wolf.

His closest AHL comparable for a U-22 year old goalie to do what he's done in his first two seasons in the AHL is Matt Murray.

Murray played 31 games in 15-16 with the AHL Penguins with a .931 save percentage.

When Murray was called up for good on March 1st 2016 the Penguins were 15th in the NHL, had a 32-21-8 record, and a .590 winning percentage.

He went 7-1-0 down the stretch., the Penguins as a whole went 16-5-0, and then he played 21 games in the playoffs and went 15-6-0 on the way to a cup win.

As of right now Dustin Wolf has played 37 games this year with a .929 save percentage.

The Flames are 16th in the NHL with a .565 points percentage and a 25-18-11 record.

Just saying...sometimes you need to take a risk to reap a reward. Markstrom and Vladar aren't going to win you a cup this year. And it's clear they aren't going to sell or try to call it quits on the season. Likely aren't firing the coach either. Calling up Wolf might be the only move to provide some sort of spark.
