I've seen some in the media suggest that if the Oilers can't get Karlsson, they may switch focus to Gostisbehere. Pure rental and less than half the salary as Karlsson. It's probably a more realistic option for them.

I agree with this, however if there is a power struggle and he’s trying to leverage himself into the GM’s chair then we have a problem. There has been rumours that this could be happening behind the scene (albeit speculation is just that…speculation). But if this is the play then this franchise is going down a very bad path and that plan needs to be stopped immediately.

You and I are on the same page.
Sutter as a GM is where my opinion of him takes a 180.
But Sutter as a Coach I will go to bat for any day of the week.

I’m with Scorp, I think we should trade Vladar and bring Wolf up and I would do it before the trade deadline to a team that needs goaltending depth.
Let Wolf try to take the next from Markstrom and let’s roll. Not a high bar to clear this year.

Why would we trade a goalie we just signed to an extension he would have been a RFA anyways so it wasn't pressing. Just like the Weegar trade talk.
Vladar has a winning record. Markstrom is the one tanking the season away he should be the one we should trade having a 6 million backup would be awful.

I think Vladar's numbers are more a product of how the team has been playing in front of him. If they were doing their jobs, his numbers would look excellent, IMO. Markstrom's numbers have taken a hit too, although he hasn't been nearly as good as Vladar, going by the eye test.

Markstrom is probably untradeable right now, but I agree about not trading Vladar. His stats might not be great for a starting goalie, but he has shown potential and I would prefer to look forward past this season.
A team might be more willing to take on Markstrom in the offseason where they can get him working with their coaches from the start and try to resurrect him. At the trade deadline though? I doubt any team wants any part of that.

Normally I would agree about trading a player at his lowest value but we got Markstrom for free so it doesn't really hurt and opens up significant cap space.
Goalies usually don't get you much on the trade market unless you are trading with the Flames
I'd be happy with a 4th rounder for him.

Ghost is like a poor-man's Karlsson, except not as good offensively, and even worse defensively. I hope the Oilers get one of these two, but if they settle for Ghost, I will laugh-he's by far the most overrated D-man in the league, and they already have the next 2 most overrated D-men in the league in Barrie and Nurse.

Great, I just want them to dump their 1st before a 5 game skid that puts them out of the playoffs.

Friedman with a late night 32 Thoughts:
Quote:
13. Calgary’s being careful, realizing this could end up being a summer where they have to redefine who they are. One thing they are looking for: a winger who can open-up space for Jonathan Huberdeau to create — like Anthony Duclair did in Florida.
|
Quote:
19. The Senators have told teams they won’t trade Alex DeBrincat at this deadline. New ownership will get a run at this, but if there isn’t some degree of certainty at the draft, then we’ll see. I don’t think MacKenzie Weegar is an option now, but we will see how everyone (including the Flames) feel later. Lots of time between then and now, lots of things for both franchises to sort out.
|
So that’s two sources - Pagnotta and Friedman, with a Weegar note today. Surprising, especially when you can see this:

I don’t get why Weegar is suddenly getting thrown into trade speculation recently after signing that contract. He seems like the right type of guy and d-man to keep around

Flames played in Ottawa this week and it's Weegar's hometown.

I don’t think we would trade Weegar right now, especially with Kylington out, and considering how good Weegs has been for us. If we did decide to deal him though, Ottawa has quite the stable of good, young players and prospects that would be very interesting.

The acquisition cost is not relevant in determining whether to trade a player. Whatever the cost, it’s now sunk.

Ducks prospect Henry Thrun will opt for free agency when his four years of college eligibility are up this summer.
https://twitter.com/user/status/1625964397985411072
I'd imagine he'll have a good market. Great production during his whole college career, including 24 points in 24 games this season. Wheeler had him as the 5th best Ducks prospect in his latest rankings ... but only the 4th best defenseman in their system (behind Mintyukov, Zellweger and Luneau), which might help explain his decision.
