That's not "garbage". It's middling.
In fact, they're probably just average & steady goaltending away from being one of the better teams in the league. And, as you said, they're coming off a lot of turnover

Funny the luck. Ottawa gets two breakaways. They are both Tkachuk. Flames get one. In OT. It’s Hanifin, who I like but he’s no scorer.
That Hanifin breakaway. He was gassed and as you say, he’s no scorer. He missed the net by an absolute mile. We probably won’t be seeing him in any shootouts.
Everything being Markstrom’s fault just doesn’t pass the smell test for me. Yes he’s been bad, I 110% admit it. But let’s see…
Flames 24th ranked power play.
Flames 16th ranked GF.
Middling FOW%.
Best scorer is ranked 52nd in the NHL, has less than half of McDavids point total.
17th expected GF
22nd shooting %
16th high danger shots for 1st place low danger shots for
5th place in giveaways to opponents 30th in shots blocked……
This is a team sport. Markstrom probably shouldn’t be starting but they are often lacking a lot of effort. How often do you see them drive to the net? How often do they own possession stats? They clearly don’t block a lot of shots. How often are there 10-bell chances in front of Markstrom?

All the amazing McDavid scoring has them FOUR points better...Calgary is good defensively they just can't get a save.
What good teams starter is in the .800s?
30th in shots blocked like its a bad thing lol...its because the other team doesn't have the puck, Sens went 20 mins without a shot
Flames wouldn't be perfect with average goaltending...they would be leading the division though

I’m surprised at the shots blocked. And yeah Markstrom has been bad. But his team has as well. His position magnifies it.
I was really hoping the Flames would end the OT on the Lindy chance, or the Hanifin breakaway, or the Kadri shot.............nope.
The OT goal was bad. Markstrom has to stop that. But the meltdown to even get it to OT was a team effort. Gotta find a way to win that game instead of giving it away.
Except they keep doing it. Over and over and over again.
This isnt 'The Exception' or a one-off...this is their normal.
In April on Garbage Bag day they're going to look back at these points and think 'what if?'
The inevitable collapse and loss is practically becoming a tradition at this point.
