I dont see the Flames as being "close" enough to win the cup here.
Not sure I like trading away even a 3rd rounder at this point, I'd rather sell some of our aging assets for a 3rd.
Maybe a Mackey for Schenn swap

Trade deadline is only fun when your team is a seller. This is the worst time of year for fans of middling teams as they continue the cycle of making themselves worse in the long term for players that don't move the needle all that much in the short term.

why? If you are saying he'd be used like Gud was here, that's nice. Because Gud was used well here with Zadorov and he performed just fine.

You both have some excellent poimts and for the most part seem to agree there is no place for drinking and driving. It is the parting shorts that have you both turning things into a pissing match. Dissentowner is right we are all human and make mistakes, and as a first responder I can't imagine what it is like to have to deal with the horrible consequences of drinking and driving. Can we keep it civil as it makes it a lot easier to follow the intent and merits of the conversation.

It can be fun as a buyer if you're at the top of the league. I had no issues with Calgary going for it last year.
But yeah, teams in 6th-10th place who make moves to try and get in the playoffs just to assuredly lose in the first two rounds usually have a bad time.

Huberdeau definitely had a lot of one on one conversations with Tre leading up the signing, I wonder if they have spoken about his current season struggles and if Huberdeau has mentioned any improvements to the lines or coaching to the GM. He seems to enjoy playing with Pelletier. He looked really happy with him on the ice.
I wonder if players make suggestions to the GM re: other players they could play well with.

My prediction is the Flames come out of nowhere and land Chychrun. Improves the D this year and sets them up in the future too. Tre has no problem spending on a cost controlled asset.

Never mind I think he signed early in the last year of his term. I misremembered.

I'm pretty sure the contract before that he went into the summer without a contract for the next year. He wasn't going to sign if he wasn't allowed to have a little more autonomy.

IMO if you're a 6-10th place team, trading for a player with term is still not a bad move
trading for rentals is what you should not do in that position

Interesting, it is probably a bit easier for Huberdeau to work with a young skilled guy with speed who wants to soak up all he can. If these guys can keep building some chemistry that would be ideal.

The team does love to trade for a big name D with a massive package.

I'd love to see a list of players who were acquired in the trade deadline who became big contributors in the playoffs and long term since the salary cap.

Per thefourthperiod, they have inquired about Chychrun so it wouldn't really be out of nowhere.

I like this type of trade because it helps us for many years. LA is rumored to be interested but not if Clarke or Byfield are in the deal. If they aren't, we can compete with their offer.

I still think the Flames will look at this as their year to go all in.
I think they could try to add a major piece like Chychrun, or Meier, that isn't just a rental and try to win this season.
Then I think over the next 12 months they try to recoup assets by moving some of the following players who have less than 2 years remaining on their deals after this season.
Mangiapane: 2 x $5.8M (27 years old)
Backlund: 1 x $5.35M (34 years old)
Lindholm: 1 x $4.85M (29 years old)
Toffoli: 1 x $4.25M (31 years old)
Dube: 1 x $2.3M (25 years old)
Hanifin: 1 x $4.95M (27 years old)
Tanev: 1x $4.5M (33 years old)
Zadorov: 1 x $3.75M (28 years old)
Kylington: 1 x $2.5M (26 years old)
Vladar: 2 x $2.2M (26 years old)

If you add Chychrun and then trade a guy like Hanifin in the off season. Can you recover almost all of the assets you traded in the Chychrun deal? I would say it would be close and Chychrun has an extra year left so it would be worth it even if you are down a bit on what you recover.
Meier is a little different, he will not be on as cap friendly of a deal. Still worth it if you can flip someone out in the off season and recover some of the assets you lost.
Flames have 10 games left until the deadline; they still need to show that this is the season where we go all in though. Still have yet to see a dominant stretch this year worth trading huge assets to go all in on this season. Doesn't mean it won't happen but IMO they are still not even a lock for the playoffs so I would persoanlly think they shouldn't go all in unless this team gets hot now. Time is running out though

Weight and Recchi to the Canes
Kunitz to the Pens
Kaberle to the Bruins
Carter to the Kings
Guerin and Hossa to the Pens
Handzus to Hawks
Gaborik to the Kings
Hagelin to Pens (not really deadline, more like Toffoli timing)
Coleman to the Bolts
Lekhonen to the Avs last year
EDIT: when you look at this list you see what kind of player actually impacts (note that Dmen are kind of different so other than Kaberle I didn't look at themn as much - arguably Manson was a factor providing depth last year). But for forwards it's middle six guys who maybe can play with the top guys from time to time, like Kunitz.

Mackey has zero value, Schenn has a number of suitors which automatically increases his value.

Exactly my point, Schenn is not worth the assets as we're not on the brink of a long playoff run.
