Creating arbitrary division lines, and turning politics into Calgary vs 'the rest of Alberta' is a great way to ruin the province, IMO. Maybe you can build a wall around Calgary and then we won't have to talk to, or look at, each other!

You put far too much faith in the private sector for your own good. Only 25% of businesses have 15-year or more longevity. The majority succumb to market forces. Are those businesses looking out for you the individual? Or their own existence?

Also with your implication to politics, this whole "run things like a business" has got to stop on two very basic points.

- Governments take in tax money, businesses don't.
- By and large, businesses operate under a for-profit model, governments are not for-profit organizations.

Two completely difference objectives and realms. And I guarantee you, the people who go into government life with that 'rah-rah business' attitude come out with a whole different (and realistic) set of expectations.

The operating body that sets regulations for the economy and institutional frameworks does not operate the same as those that have to abide by them.

According to Ryan Pike on the radio about 20 minutes ago, the net present value of funds the Oilers actually contributed is $50 million. That's a helluva deal for the Oilers, and definitely won't happen here.

Yeah, the City of Edmonton got fleeced. And the City of Calgary would be wise to not go that route.

LOL holy! That was totally sarcastic and was typing as a deplorable UCP loving Calgarian! hahahahaha

I thought that the she has 10 votes on council would have given that away. I like Gondek.

Well I basically just copied the arena we have now.

Added some fins to lower wind resistance.

And a racing stripe that I think looks pretty sharp.

The NPV of the *previous* City/CSEC deal was ~ -$50m.

The Oilers ownership kicked in about $35-40m into Rogers Place.

Two similar numbers, but distinct.

Based solely on the first two sentences you probably should have spent more time in school with your teachers.

Some parts should. Efficiency, getting value for money spent, reward high performing employees, investing in productivity improvements, listening to your stakeholders.

These are all qualities that high performing organizations share.

True, but to single these out as "everything needs to operate like business" is kind of odd because there's lots of businesses that do a pretty crappy job at some of these things and doing them well is not the exclusive domain of business.

Fabulous!

Should governments be run efficiently, effectively and productively?

Your statements are very naive.

The biggest reason businesses are perceived to have higher efficiency isn't because the private sector is magic. It's because the lowest efficiency operations in most sectors get competed into the ground and close, and their market share is taken by their more efficient competitors.

An inefficient government department is unlikely to lose its funding to a more efficient competitor.
