- Bella as Ellie was really good. I kinda felt like something was missing thru the first three episodes, and I finally figured it out. There's nothing missing, but Ashley Johnson just did such an amazing and iconic portrayal of Ellie and Bella's performance is just different. It would be like if someone tried to play Gandalf after Ian Mckellan absolutely owned the character. They might do great, but they'll never be Ian.
I don’t think it’s particularly different, because she really nails the personality and vocal inflections. I only say this because I struggled at first and was trying to figure it out, but I think it’s because Bella Ramsey has less emotive range in her face. It’s not a criticism of any kind, but she seems to look kind of “surprised” most of the time, and there is little variation when she’s angry, or happy, etc. (based on other things she’s been in). Ashley on the other hand has a ton, aided by the game designers of course to really sell every nuance.
In a way it is different, but I think Bella is approaching the character in the same way Ashley did and going for the same result. She’s doing an equally great job, but because Ellie’s face expressed almost as much as the vocals in the game, it comes off different in the show.

It's this weird almost pantomime thing they have to do for the game because subtle emotions won't come through as well as they do on a live actor's face, obviously.
In case anyone wanted to know what it looked like for them to try to act a scene for the game, here (this wasn't in the show but it was part of the "alternate" Bill story so it won't be).
Spoiler!

I thought the most unrealistic thing was that he just turned a valve on the natural gas plant and all of a sudden he had electricity and gas for his stove.

No, it's just that the part about him getting into the control room for the facility and going through the startup checklist was cut. That was what the rest of the 2 hour version was going to be.

I hope they use a bit more of Gustavo Santaolalla's music from the game. If I recall correctly, every piece of music in the game was from the original score he wrote. And of all the things that can be reused for the show, it's the game score.
We got to meet and chat with Gustavo at the Last of Us - One Night Live. He was really nice and you could tell he was happy to be there to perform and talk to folks.
I'll post the feed of the event with the live soundtrack and scene acting below but it absolutely has massive spoilers for the entire game and ending. As well as Annie Wersching performing.
They did turn off the stream to have their "special edition" ending of the game just for the people in attendance so that is cut off though.
Spoiler!

For the first game, the technology wasn't there yet to add small enough cameras recording the actors faces but they do now (for the Last of Us Part 2 and movies all the time now). But they did/do have animators go back and do animation/cleanup passes on that performance back in certainly.

They could have re-used the control room set from Chernobyl!

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
The show was the most expensive production since Canada is too clean.
“When you go to major areas, cities, states, there’s always a liminal area that used to be an army base, or maybe it was an old factory. Children of Men, they shot a lot of that in old factory areas and old shipping yards. And I thought, Oh, Canada’s got lots of that, there’ll be a bunch of places that we’re going to just run around and augment it. We couldn’t find any of that. I swear to you, we couldn’t even find an abandoned gas station. We had a slow realization that many things that we thought we would just shoot on location, we would be building. Also, the architecture just wasn’t there. If we’re careening down streets and knocking things down—I was really shocked. It’s a very clean country. There’s like no, “Oh, yeah, over there, there’s all these abandoned buildings.” No American, uh, grit. [Laughs]”

That’s pretty interesting actually.

I just hope they aren't like "man Season 1 in Canada was too tough, we had to manufacture all the grit and buildings - for Season 2 let's just film in Detroit and touch nothing"

Chernobyl is the only mini series I'd put on the same level as Band of Brothers.
On every level except rewatchability. I run through BoB once every couple of years, but there's no way I could do that with Chernobyl. I've seen it once by myself, and once with the wife. I might watch it a third time when my kids are old enough to understand and appreciate it, but that will be it

The creators have been so glowing positive about filming in Alberta I would be shocked if season two doesn't film here.
I haven't played season 2, but I saw a poster here and a couple of my friends mentioned that Vancouver would make a ton more sense with the locations in the second game.

I've re-watched Chernobyl a couple times, but in general I agree. I think Chernobyl is executed better than Band of Brothers, but it's so heavy. Band of Brothers at least has some levity. It's definitely an easier re-watch.

Yea with BoB there's a lot of loss and suffering, but there are many wins and fun moments as well. There's none of that in Chernobyl, it's just a train of dread and sadness. Which is no slight at all against the series, the subject matter demands it, but it's not a world I want to revisit
I know a guy who was a company commander during the invasion and asked him how accurate Generation Kill is. He went and watched it and said it was so accurate that it was uncanny how it was almost a perfect portrayal of his particular experience. Right down to the part where he had to physically get out of his Humvee to go to the other Humvee the first time they engaged to yell at them for clamming up and not firing back and maneuvering out of there.
