I do wonder how bad it would be if they opened it up. A direct line from anywhere in the North directly into downtown? I suspect it would just be too much traffic, given how busy Beddington is at rush hour. Personally I would love if it opened, as my wife's aunt is north of it, and we always have to go the long way around. But I can see why the city won't do it.
What is "too much traffic?". People will pile cars on it until it's so slow that people pick other routes. It seems completely weird to me to arbitrarily determine that one spot of "Centre Street" shouldn't be "busy".
And building a giant tower in the middle of said "Centre Street" is a bit odd too.

Centre street south of the bus trap is a two lane residential street. It would be a complete clusterfata IMO if they opened it up to all of the communities in North Central Calgary, even worse for the people who live on that street.
Freshco sucks. They turned our neighbourhood Sobeys in Evanston into a Freshco and I hate it. Terrible bakery (there is no bakery, just pre packaged bread), no deli or fresh made things, produce is very limited and always in poor shape, and nothing is ever cheap. Never notice anything cheaper than Superstore would have. The meat department is Ok only because it’s a Westgate meats and they have some variety. Seafood is non existent. The actual layout, quality of interior design, and look of the store is as gross and cheap looking as you can imagine.
Did I miss something or is every Safeway going to be transformed? I’m sad the Whitehorn Safeway turned to a Freshco. That was was first job as a bag boy in the 90’s. I also remember shopping there when it was Food for Less….now I have to visit the nostalgic Calgary thread.
I think I live pretty close to you.
For me the biggest problem with Fresco, is that if they are a discount store, then sell me bulk packaging where you get the unit cost really low. Instead it's all small packaging and not overly expensive for small packaging, but very expensive per unit cost compared to Walmart/superstore/Costco... I feel like I might as well get groceries at Dollarama.
Walmart and SaveOn have grabbed a big chunk of my market share directly because of the brand change Sobeys made there.

Just thinking further south of 20th ave into the core. It's already bad enough because our stupid city won't build the Green line where it is needed, so if you open it to vehicles traveling by bus will become even worse than they already are. Forcing vehicles to take the long way keeps them on other routes that have more capacity(or, in an ideal world, onto the bus(or LRT!) that can take the shortcut).

FreshCo is not a discount store. It's a poor people store. Only rich people can afford discounts. Poor people have $50 to spend on groceries.

Buy the owners out and build a proper road between Beddington Trail and Coop/Safeway. In the long term the north line train is supposed to go through there anyways and unless they tunnel through the area those houses will have to be demolished.

Doesn't look like it(see 1:50). All the houses are still there.

Even if it was open why would someone take Center St from Beddington all the way to downtown? Even in rush hour it's way faster to use Deerfoot - Memorial. Might be appealing to the strugglers who are deathly afraid of Deerfoot I guess

Especially after the green line is open and Centre St is one lane each way there's no way people would do that.
But there are some trips (something like Harvest Hills to Thornecliffe) that would be WAY faster with that open.

Interesting, so they are tunneling a new road under Centre Street but running the train on the surface with bus only access as well. I guess the residents won't have street parking or access anymore. Also, if it was my house having a train in my front yard doesn't seem very pleasant.

Ya, a lot of the North section has some really stupid compromises. Why they don't elevate it from the river to 20th ave or so is beyond me. Vancouver's line is a good example of how to do it nicely.
Faster yes, but I think WAY is a bit of an exaggeration. Detouring through Berkshire BLVD and/or Beddington BLVD only adds like 5 minutes max
It's probably only a 5 minute difference, but that's also twice as long as that trip would be. I think "way longer" is an appropriate description for an 100% increase in travel time - maybe the caps were over dramatic.
Downtown traffic is insane lately. I've gone to drop off/pick up my wife at the office a few times lately and it seems like there are road/lane closures everywhere. I sat at a red light the other day for like 4 or 5 full cycles without moving.

In the past, they didn't look into elevated options along Centre Street N because of the higher capital costs and negative impact on urban realm improvements.

The city decided to do all the downtown road work at once. For some reason.

Ya, and I don't buy that excuse. I can guarantee tunneling under centre, given all the utilities(including the ones they just relocated 10 years ago) is going to be a delay and boondoggle. Elevating the line avoids all the traffic disruption, keeps centre st wide open for buses and traffic, and is far less an impediment on the urban realm than a train running up the middle.

I'm on your side of this. Society generally greatly undervalues the visual impact of putting stuff in the air.

Keep in mind, this is the really, really old demo video from the older plans. From what I know there is no more tunnelling under center street and the river. It's just going to exit a downtown tunnel at Eau Claire, onto an above-river bridge going over the lagoon/sanctuary, and then above ground all the way center.
The tunnel under the river and uphill was too expensive.

I think the plan is to tunnel under 16th still. Just a short section, like the red line at 16th(but straight, of course).
