I probably wouldn't take Gudbranson back even if the Blue Jackets attached two first-round picks to that contract.
Are you kidding? Minnesota is spending $50 million of cap on nothing for the next 3 years. I'd happily take Gudbranson back for $12M total and two Columbus first round picks. Those are likely to be elite prospects.
fair enough- so that was his master plan then to go the Bedard winner?- hats off if true
I think his master plan was being 1.5h flight from his dad, who has cardiovascular health issues.
I know that since my dad hit 70, I value every minute I have with him. I'd probably be living in Portland or something pursuing my career but none of that matters as much as time spent with your loved ones.

Even Gudbranson was arguably worth $4M last year.
Fair, Columbus' picks are lottery picks, wasn't really thinking of that, lol. I was more thinking picks in the 20s.
But looking at Gudbranson's career — he's the definition of a one-year wonder. And even then, his very best year was as a solid third-pairing defenceman; at his worst, he hasn't played at an NHL level. Maybe he can recapture that magic if he comes to Calgary again. But for now, that deal is an anchor and one of the very worst in the NHL. I don't think Columbus would be able to move it for free.

I don't think anyone would be upset with him if he was honest from the get go instead of answers like "It was best for us not to go back to Calgary" Or not even acknowledge us.
Even today he almost said it was best for us not to return.
Reporter asks if it bothers Gaudreau that his former team is in a playoff race battle and his new teams sucks, Gaudreau indifferent about it. That sums up this guy's desire to win perfectly for me, good riddance.
Yup, it's the last place chant that I will try to get going.
You're - in - last - place! Clap, Clap, Clap-Clap, Clap

So many butt-hurt fans. Gaudreau seemed sincere in saying he wanted to stay in Calgary, but ultimately decided against it because of his own personal reasons.
Gaudreau was a great player for the Flames and created a lot of great moments for this team and city. Definitely should be cheered for his tribute. He was the face of the franchise and one of the most exciting players to wear the flaming C.
The only thing more obnoxious than the "Boo" crowd is the "Oh he never mattered Johnny Who" crowd. It's like you're trying extra hard to be in denial.
I get that we went for it last year in the playoffs and the risk was that we would get nothing in return for Johnny. Management rolled the dice that we would lose JG for nothing and yup we got nada.
In hindsight do you make the same decision or do you set a deadline?

I agree with your assessment of Gudbranson's career.
I would trade $12 million of cap and real money for two Columbus first round picks. Getting Gudbranson for 3 years on top of it would just be icing on the cake.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Whether he was sincere in his flip-flop or not, the way he left was ####ty. He was within his rights to do what he did - but that doesn't make it the 'right' way.

And if you don't have cap room, turn around and trade him, 50% retained to another team (like the Oilers) and get another haul.
3 firsts + for $2M in cap space? Yeah, I'd do that.
Well that's contingent upon the market for Gudbranson at $4m being negative-two firsts and the market for Gudbranson at $2m (for three years beyond this one, remember) somehow swinging all the way around to being another first.
Would be surprised. But it's all moot — Columbus' firsts are rightfully off the table

Hopefully when this game is behind us, the perpetual re-hashing of his departure will - if not end - at least be greatly reduced to the occasional pointless bump.

Yes it's moot. But Gudbranson at $2M per would definitely have value - more than you are ever going to give him.
And it wouldn't even have to be CBJ's lottery picks - I would do that deal for a couple mid-tier firsts (plus whatever can be extracted on the flip)
I don't doubt he would have value around the NHL. Not on my team for more than one year at a time, though, given how volatile he's been in his career. His performance is a big reason why Columbus is so far down the standings this year — he can't play higher in the lineup than the No. 6 hole, which severely limits his value.
Giving him 4x4 and playing him in a top-pairing role is a recipe for disaster. It's the same with guys like Edmundson and Chiarot.
