We talk about youth injection but we've had several already this year. Ruzicka is now a regular, Zohorna got a few games, now we get to see Duehr in an extended stretch and he looks quite good. Great speed and has a good shot off the wing. Pelletier may or may not stick for the rest of the year, but he also has good potential to be an NHLer sooner rather than later.
All in all, I think we're doing okay in bringing some younger players along. Let's also not forget that Dube is having his best season ever and looks like a permanent fixture in the top 6.
Remember, we haven't really had a lot of top picks in recent years, so this is as good as it gets when you don't have the draft capital.
|
Zohorna turns 27 in a couple months, not sure he qualifies as “injecting youth”. There is some youth we could inject (Pelletier and Zary are two players who would qualify as youth) but I don’t think Zohorna does.

Geoff Ward was benching Kylington without explanation before Sutter was.
The last coach to actually
1) Play prospects and give them an equal chance as veterans (i.e. meritocracy)
2) Know how to interact with the media
Was Bob Hartley.
Peters started off that way, but upon the fantenberg acquisition lost his way.

I think Sutter made it pretty clear how he felt about Pelletier by putting him on the ice with 6min left in the game.
Salim pushing the Tre/Sutter rift agenda, using AHL stats to make an argument that Phillips & Pelletier deserve to be with the big club. That’s he he got a response focused on NHL statistics.

Bob Hartly wass forced to play prospects because he had a team full of spare parts. Prospects get equal chance if 1. They are good and really consistent 2. Thier team sucks.

New to sensationalism? Nope.
Can we go back to Francis quotes in spoiler tags?

Écoute pas ce que Sutter va dire dans la conférence de presse.

Basically it was a game, Flames should win.
This was Tampa's 4th game in 6 nights on a road trip
Hopefully the Flames can use this game and play more consistently.

I thought it was bad on the radio but once I saw the video you can see it's Sutter doing his thing.
I think he miss que'd this one, bad execution of a Sutterism, but he wasn't trying to do anything more then that.
I do get the negative reaction to it, but it was more bad joke than malicious intent so some of the reaction is too extreme.

This was an important win with teams around them all winning last night. The upcoming schedule is pretty soft for the coming weeks and the Flames have the opportunity to make up some ground in the standings and maybe pass the Kings. Just can't take some of the bad teams lightly as the Flames had done this season as they have to beat the Jackets and Hawks.

If we're going to spin narratives to suit our world view, I've got one.
This was a masterclass in taking the pressure off of the team. Sutter has always been one of the best at having the pulse of the team and players. He sees a group that is feeling the pressure of expectations in a Canadian market. A team that fancies themselves competing for the division title, not one of the last playoff spots.
So he is making the media talk about him. Not his young players, not the power play, not his struggling vezina finalist. Him.
It's akin to "Must be New York again, gotta talk to Canada's team"

Absolutely, then a whole bunch of guys who ended up in Europe and the KHL. The error bars on a prospect like Pelletier are still really big. No need to pile on undue pressure by having media and fans compare him to the list you just assembled. It won’t help him get there any faster.

There's something to be said for making the most of your early 20s, but doing this forever would kill me. I barely "report" on anything anyway.

I have enjoyed seeing how hard you have worked at it and the inroads you have made.
But I totally understand wanting to pursue something that might be more stable financially. Good luck with what whatever that may be.
