Ill say from my small coaching experience.
I coached play hard, between the whistles, play as a team and skate.
If i didnt notice you in a game, that was great... it meant you did everything right.
I believe Sutter is that way, if he notices you, you did something extra ordinary good or horribly wrong.
The fact that he didn't notice Pelts... I believe Pelts will be used more.

Exactly. Flames just got 2 huge points against a good team WITH A ROOKIE IN THE LINEUP and everyone is mad.
It's not a secret that Sutter doesn't like the pressers. His players know it too. All of you saying that Pelts would take that personally.. why would he? He's not an idiot. I'm sure he got constructive feedback from the coaching staff.
Goddmanit people, can't you just for once enjoy a solid win

Ppl aren't complaining about the long way to go part, it's the what number is he part. I dunno about the whole only what's said to him in person matters thing. If my boss gave me encouragement in private but then dunked on me in big meetings, I think that would be be a bit annoying.

I don't see anything wrong with what he said. The kid is 21 years old and this was the first game of his career and he should have a long road ahead of him.
No one in the world wants their first day on the job to be their best day on the job.
|
I will say I still dont like the "what number was he" line, and the whole schtick with the game sheet is still annoying but the video isnt nearly as bad as it looked just transcribed by Francis.
Still though, no reason for all the schtick. Just say "He was alright, lots of room to get better"

And its 100% this.
I lead a big team of people. Some much younger than me as young as 23, and some much older than me.
But if i praise them and support them behind closed doors, only to then turn around and patronize them and not defend them in meetings with peers or other superiors then that would be the worst possible type of leadership.
If anything its better to keep the constructive criticisim behind closed doors and be more positive publically, especially for a youngster where confidence as an NHLer is so key.

No, that is genuine hatred.
Sutter's dealing with the media is mild annoyance at worst, unless they're talking about farming.

I don’t know how Sutter talks to his players in private.
And I have said before that I don’t care what he says to the media.
But the fact is he represents the organization in these press conferences and that creates a very poor impression for your customers. No way I am going to defend him for that.

Didn't find anything offensive or out of line, in the press conference. No player is going to get their panties in a bunch over those comments.

Anyway, comments aside, I hope the Flames are able to use this game as a building block for future success this season. Beating a pretty good team in good fashion. Should be lots of positives to focus on.

Only the over the top stuff gets called out
If you said "the Flames have a long way to go" nobody would care
Imagine falling for Francis click bait lol
I hope Pelts plays next game and gets better...he was fine but nothing special.

All I see is a coach protecting a player from what could easily be an Edmonton-esque media clown show. Good on him.

Making positive, or at least lukewarm, comments about a player after his first game is not an Edmonton thing. We as a fan base need to stop worrying about avoiding what our neighbors up north are doing and have done in the past.

The Sutter grind is that Pelletier has no choice but to take the eff you I'll show you you POS attitude. It's what Darryl wants and why he's so effective in the short -medium term. If Pelletier shrinks from this, he is the nothing prospect Darryl is making him out to be. He won't. He's responded every time Sutter has put a mountain in front of him.

No, Salim was the one who initially asked about Pelletier (using a French pronunciation because that’s how Salim rolls). I don’t think Sutter had any interest in giving him a thoughtful answer; it isn’t the first time.
To be clear, the subsequent comments (“he’s got a long way to go”) were in response to a follow-up question from another reporter (something about whether he can learn from the more veteran guys while being on the bench).
