This was something that was obvious to anyone who wasn't a Musk simp. $8.99/month per account to have your propaganda amplified is an easy budget call for authoritarian regimes.

I feel like one of those dooshbags from the 90s who would smugly inform you they don't own a TV as though you were shallower or lesser than them because you did; however, I don't use Twitter and I do feel better than people who do and then complain about it. Like, just don't go on it and all of this ceases to matter and you are no longer helping Elon and the rightwing BS he's allowing to flourish on the platform.

^Yep, real easy solution. I have a Twitter account, haven't used it but only once or twice. (I think I poked fun at Brent Krahn once...?)

Given the source, I think Sliver should feel pretty good right now.

How is that a dumb take? It’s literally the best take in this entire thread.

Social media is the scourge of everything. It’s quite literally the driving factor of extremism in both directions and a prime contributor to depression. Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat and all the other stupid A F sites and apps can die in a fiery death trap as far as I can tell and humanity will emerge from that 1,000,000% better off.

Believe it or not, before social media, people still talked to people and had friends, knew what was going on in their communities and were actually way more interested and versed with the news. Now we have Twitters limited character windows creating false impressions of knowledge on everybody.

Like, can you actually tell me what it’s good for?

I dunno we had two world wars before social media and zero after so maybe it’s a good thing. The facts have spoken.

I agree with everything. And I’m glad I didn’t get into Twitter or TikTok at all.

But if Twitter burns, people will find/create an alternative.

I have never created a twitter account nor do I desire to. As with others I feel social media is pretty toxic and I like to keep it to a minimum with sports forums, auto forums, and occasionally facebook. That said twitter comes in handy for sports news and I always appreciate it when posters with twitter accounts post tweets of breaking news. Selfishly I kind of hope it collapses if only to see Elon fail.

Sooo . . . . Anyone moved to / planning to move to a new platform?

The most challenging part of doing so is that you want the volume of content/users to be as good as (if not better) than Twitter from a mass adoption standpoint. But beyond that, anyone made the switch?

I'm waiting for Spoutible to come available. It's very close, and if you pre-register you can get your handle name before the masses in about 1-2 weeks from now.

The next platform has to have far better controls on handling misinformation/deviant accounts. That's my big requirement.

Also happy to start pushing a new platform for my business and personal if it means a cleaned up, less toxic experience.

Nope. I'm content to let this part of social media die where my (already minute) use of it is concerned.

I enjoy Twitter and will switch when it shuts down and/or something replaces it with similar uptake. I’m not chasing around a new platform every two weeks wondering if this one will be “the one.”

Yeah exactly. I'm mostly on there for sports news (and random interest accounts, like travel, photography, animals, storm chasers, etc), so I'm not switching until a mass exodus of sports reporters occurs, and they mostly gravitate to the same new app.

I haven't quite had the same experience as others are having recently, but I'm also fairly apolitical (or as much as one can be these days anyways), so I don't follow many of those types of accounts. If you do, I can see why those suggestions are happening, though agreed that they shouldn't be happening. Pretty creep the stuff I'm hearing about going on in that app since the takeover.

Me, too. As long as Twitter exists I’ll be there. For my needs, it’s a good platform. I’ve been admitted to Post but haven’t used it and don’t know if I will.

I've found Twitter to be much more enjoyable since they added the Following option. Only the people you follow and in chronological order. Like the good ol' days.

Your feed is now only as good as the people you follow. No terrible suggested posts or people and there's actually an "end" to the doom scroll.
