If you know how Sutter operates, its a direct shot at Phillips to take another step and push even harder if he's going to overcome his size issue (which he certainly has).

It's not meant to tear the guy down at all.

If he just said "he needs to get stronger" then I think people would have been fine with that. But size insinuates a different issue.

Issue is 5'10" is perfectly fine for an NHLer, hell I'm pretty sure Darryl himself is 5'10" and he was an NHLer as a 21 year old.
Sutter plays guys his height in prominent roles every single night...size isn't just height and its obviously his biggest weakness right now.

the average NHLer is 6 foot 1 and 200 pounds, not sure why people are unwilling to admit size is a factor

Size isn't just height. He did go on to say that he needs to build strength but that he believes he can do it.

I'm sure he would have said the same of Dube and Mangiapane if he was here when they first played NHL games. They often got knocked off the puck or their feet. Not everyone turns pro with the strength to play NHL minutes.

Did he say height? No, he said size. Adding muscle adds size. Clearly, Sutter sees his lack of strength as a weakness.

I would say what Sutter has done with Dube as NHL player should put everyone at ease in terms of the Development of a guy like Pelletier. Dube is not a big guy and was not a very consistent, reliable or fit enough player until Darryl pushed him to be better. Look at him now playing on the top line and likely set for a 20g 25a season barring a complete collapse.

He might not blow anyone away, but you certainly want him in the top 9 each and every night and there are probably 31 other teams that would say the same thing.

if I had a shot at multi seven figures as an early twenty something I would be using every spare hour to get thicc in the gym

four chicken breasts a day, egg whites, powders, bars, the works

I know it's not easy but Jakob and Matty should be going full gym rat, in particular implementing the Marty St Louis regimen

too much to gain to be using down time on fortnite

Just wait until Darryl realizes that Dube is small! It will be popcorn row for Dillon!

Boy he was quick on the "I like Jakob" reply too.

Ugh such a fascinating conversation he was engaging in, and then Wills totally ends it with a dumb question about Cale Makar/Roman Josi.
This is the number one thing Flames are interested in right now - use of young players in the lineup.
Sutter is taking you through his approach in a very thoughtful and transparent way.
And effin' Wills comes along and asks about Cale Makar and that's the end of that because that's the question he decided he was going to ask. Instead of asking a follow-up conversation about player development at the NHL level.

So cringey and the question got the abrupt answer it deserved. It's too bad because Sutter doesn't often go into that kind of detail. Fascinating when he does.

Wills is terrible he always asks the dumb questions in that annoying voice of his.

What a drop off from Peter Maher.

Right? When that's happening just let him roll. And if you are asking a question just make it a very open ended one that continues the conversation.
When he does open up and really talk hockey, it's fascinating. And you could tell he wanted to keep talking about it.

This post can’t be thanked enough.

Pretty obvious that Wills’ niche is a PBP guy and I actually think he is pretty good. He’s not a reporter, analyst, opinion guy.

If he was in a bigger US market that’s all he would have to do, just call the games.

an excerpt (with apologies to the Guardian)

In his highly anticipated autobiography, Spare, Jakob Pelletier recounts what he says was a physical attack by his teamate, Walker, now Flames 4th line winger, as their relationship fell apart over the older winger's favorite son status, by the coach Daryl SUtter

Describing a confrontation at his Stockton home in 2022, Jakob says Walker called him 'small', 'undersized' and 'passive', which Jakob calls a “parrot[ing of] the press narrative” about his play.
The confrontation escalated, Jakob writes, until Walker “grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and … knocked me to the floor”.
The extraordinary scene, which Jakob says resulted in visible injury to his back, is one of many in Spare, which will be published worldwide next week and is likely to spark a serious furore amongst Flames fans.Amid stringent pre-launch security around the book, CalgaryPuck obtained a copy.

The book’s title comes from an old saying in hockey circles: that a big winger is an heir to titles, power and fortune, and the smaller one is therefore a spare, should anything happen to the big guy.
Spare is a remarkable volume, in which the altercation between the two prospects forms a startling passage.

Jakob accused his teammate of acting like an heir, unable to understand why his smaller teammate was not content to be a spare.Insults were exchanged, before Walker claimed he was trying to help.
Jakob said: “Are you serious? Help me? Sorry – is that what you call this? Helping me?”
That comment, Jakob says, angered his teammate, who swore while stepping towards him. Now scared, Jakob writes, he went to the kitchen, his furious teammate following.
Jakob writes that he gave his teammate a glass of water and said: “Walks, I can’t speak to you when you’re like this.”
He writes: “He set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”
Jakob writes that Walker urged him to hit back, citing fights they had in training camp. Jakob says he refused to do so. Walker left, Jakob says, then returned “looking regretful, and apologised”.
When Walker left again, his little buddy writes, he “turned and called back: ‘You don’t need to tell Tre about this.’
“‘You mean that you attacked me?’
“‘I didn’t attack you, Pelts.’”
Jakob says he didn’t immediately tell his GM – but did call Eric Francis.

Maybe he's a little smaller weight-wise, but that will come just like it did for the other three. Secondly, not many coaches would tinker with a lineup when the team was going like it was. I suspect if the team drops another one or doesn't look good against the Avs, Pelletier will draw in right quick.
My post, from a week ago, wasn't talking solely of Pelletier. But, yes, he is small like the players you suggest. He's going to have to overcome that with strength, speed and smarts.

It's not just a game of 'get thicc quicc'. If you get all beefed out super quick, you'll lose your speed and agility. It takes time to build it doing it the right way. I'm sure he'll put some size on in the off season.

Don’t their strength and conditioning coaches give them offseason and in season routines to follow?
