I don't care where they are in the standings or who they play against, blowing a 3-1 lead in the 3rd in that fashion is unacceptable.

I dunno if I am buying this 85% chance to make the playoffs stuff. Doesn't seem to match with what I am watching. Playoff races tend to get tighter and harder, and doesn't look like Vegas / LA or Seattle are going anywhere which leaves 2 wildcard spots while multiple teams, including the one we should have beat last night as well as the defending Stanley Cup champs who are getting healthy again, fight for them.
Stats often miss a lot of the big picture. You're seeing a highly negative PGT because straight up that is a game that the Flames should have won, not just salvage a point. The end.

Actually the team is producing as well as can be expected with their two main star players, huberdeau and Markstrom playing like ####

Dude I have been no Markstrom defender at all.
He has been playing poor hockey all year. I can see why they are trying to get him going but he has been very streaky, mostly on the poor side.
That second and third goal should not have gone in and completely changed the game. The Flames skaters played timid because they knew any chance against was likely to be in the back of the net.

Yeah, Huby blew it with Kadri in OT, but I still wouldn't say he is playing #### atm. Were you pissed at his play on the Flames 1st goal too?

That's fair. I just know criticizing Markstrom around here has been off limits for some posters so I must have got you confused. There's definitely something going on with Markstrom this season and I couldn't fault any of the players that may be losing confidence with him in the net. After he let in the 2nd goal you could see the air come out of the balloon as the team allowed two more quick ones (one called back fortunately on the offside). Not good.

Huby at times seems to be trying too hard. It looked like he was trying to make a move to beat the defender one on one which is not exactly the approach you want to see in 3 on 3 OT.

Yeah, it's obvious he's trying too hard. I get it that he wants to be a game changer that he was advertised to be, but he should know better than that.
Still I wouldn't say he's been s###, I think he's been much more relaxed than earlier in the season. Also I didn't see a negative post about Huby before the end of the game and some people should lay off the rage a little (not saying you can't be upset or criticize players or the team)

I think it's a confidence thing for this team at 3v3 and don't see it changing soon. I'm just glad that 3v3 doesn't happen in the playoffs. The Flames this year play best when things tighten up on the ice. I feel this bodes well heading into the playoffs but goaltending needs to be there for them to be successful.

It's definitely a mental problem rn, just like the fact that the team so obviously plays more cautious with Markström in net and unfortunately it has been costing them points the whole season

What has happened to the power of the Swedes?

I was wondering how long it would be before someone called out Ramus. Directly or indirectly responsible for 2 goals last night. Not taking nearly enough blame for that loss. He needs to be much much better.

Problem is that Sutter in his older years has really started to lean into size and veterans being the only way to win.
He wasnt like that in San Jose or in 03-04 in Calgary. His two cup winning teams in LA were young too.
In 03-04 Regehr, Leopold, Saprykin, Kobasew and Lombardi were all 23 or younger to start the season.
This team only Adam Ruzicka. None of Saprykin, Kobasew, or Lombardi had the AHL success that Pelletier, Phillips, or Zary have had.
Maybe we just need the 03-04 Sutter back because that coach was open to playing young players.
|
I want kids in the lineup as much as anyone, but part of the problem is that Brad Treliving has assembled a full roster of veterans. Sutter is in a precarious situation where if he starts benching vets willynilly for unknown quantities, he loses the room.
I am not defending Sutter, but it is a lot easier for a coach to pit a Pelettier against a Phillips or Duehr than against a Lucic or Lewis. It's just a reality about the roster he has.
Last year we were very lucky that Zadorov was a new addition, his early struggles are the only reason Sutter had the balls to put Oliver Kylington in the top four.
The tough, cold-blooded, forward-thinking decisions have to be made by the GM because they are not in the room, the coach has to manage egos and companionships.
Treliving calling these guys up is just lip-service. If he isn't going to open up roster spots for them, he's basically just scapegoating Sutter. Sutter benching a player isn't just about writing new lines on a whiteboard, it's about having a conversation with a player who has been, probably mediocre not bad, and saying that he's going to gamble on an unknown. Even if we as fans see the obvious value in that, that player being benched is probably the first domino in a soft mutiny.

Disagree strongly.
1) If the bolded is accurate, he's already lost the room.
2) It's not "willynilly" it's demotions for lazy play (see Kadri in 3rd) or bad play.
3) Traditionally Sutter's been known for no BS honesty, and he can still do that. If vets are playing badly all you need to tell them is precisely what to do to get back in the line up / more ice time (work harder).
Bad teams entitle vets to ice time. The team's mantra when Sutter game in was a meritocracy. That is gone, it needs to come back for this team to succeed.
There is no justification anymore for not trying young players lighting the AHL on fire. None. We are 50% of the regular season in with the same underperforming results. So we either need to decide that the team is NOT underperforming or they are, in which case the youth should get increased chances.
The AHL is not as bad / far from the NHL as everyone makes it out to be. That's why St.Louis' AHL team was able to beat the Flames last night.

I think the one thing that should be abundantly clear by now is that something just isn't right with Markstrom. Its half way through the year. The time to work through it has passed. Hopefully Sutter focuses on what gives them the best chance for a win at this point.

He was pretty mediocre the entire game before that too. One of his worst games in a while that I can recall. I really didn't like Tanev's game either.
On the plus side, Duehr looked pretty good in his limited ice time. He really pushed that line into the o-zone on a regular basis and got a few good chances to score. Much more effective than Zohorna or Ritchie, but it's one game and he has to do that again to stay in the lineup.
