Lots more discussed with other speakers, supposedly there was a movie made in Finland in the past year about a Finnish Flames prospect from the 90s who got 3 NHL games in the 90s and then quit.

Salim should be careful about what he reports on when the mics are off. Hope he confirmed if it was on the record or not

Yeah, if this was off the record it's a ridiculous amount of unprofessionalism from Salim.

Old man moment here but the newer generation of sports reporters are more interested in being first and being gossipy than anything of substance. There are a few up and coming guys who lean way too much into being first and whatever gossip they hear.

Well it is on the shoulders of the person saying something to confirm whether it is on or off the record. Not on the reporter. If the individual said it was off the record, then the reporter should honour that request. Unclear whether Sutter said it was on the record or not.

The question of whether hockey’s long history of having certain things not reported without the formal on the record/off the record convo or swept under the rug is a different question. But it certainly is not a journalistic ethics thing where the burden is on the reporter to confirm whether things are on the record.

Disagree
If you are talking to someone with a mic on and then the mic is turned off it is implied that anything talked about further is off the record.

At minimum a reporter should confirm whether it is or not.

I say this as someone who worked in the profession

The way it was worded sure didn’t come across as an actual piece of reporting. You want to want to report on Sutter’s comments about a player then report his actual words.
I could not agree with Jiri more.

The TSN reporter is embarrassing and trying too hard to make fake stories.

He should honestly be fired for not only reporting fake news but overall sucking at his job.

Because he is a small time reporter and no one wants to listen his garbage other than basement blogs.

quick way to losing the respect of people on the inside

why will they even bother to have an honest discussion with you in the future if they know you don't have integrity when you say it's off the record

Yup just a guy that's trying to advance his career, nothing more by being some Flames insider and hoping his stirring the pot can land him a bigger role somewhere else at TSN.

Especially since he didn't even quote what Sutter said off the record, he just inferred an opinion from the additional comments Sutter supposedly had.

The beat guys around the league and in this city know what and how they can report what they know, and what they can't say (but also know).

They'll lose their gig pretty quickly becuase the Flames won't put up with that trust going out the window.

If he wants to share it all he has to say is that it is his opinion that Sutter doesn't see Phillips as an NHLer and say nothing of where he got the impression. It's not great because he's editorializing, but at least he's not leaking stuff that Sutter is saying off the record.

Well there may be a convention in hockey. I know in politics any good politician knows that anything you say can be on the record. Even when you confirm that things are off the record they sometimes end up in stories as “senior cabinet ministers said” and anyone with half a brain can deduct who said it, so the reporters are not always fair in that regard. But hockey may have a different convention. In politics you will never see a politician shooting the #### about what they just announced at a presser after the mics are turned off. But it is a more formalized process with backgrounders, news releases etc. so whatever the politician wants to say is in those docs or said at the mic. But sports would be unique, at least vis-a-vis politics in that there may be an implied “off-the-record” that is never stated.

With Treliving's comments this week saying they are still looking for that filler for the hole in the top nine, from inside or from without ... and then further mentioning the chemistry between Kadri and Huberdeau without mentioning Lucic ...

Have to think they give Pelletier a chance.

May not be tonight though.

Huberdeau liked the IG post where Flames announced the Duehr and Pelletier call-up (he doesn't give those likes a lot) I have a slight memory from the camp where Huby and Pelts had a little moment, like Huby was giving advice to Jakob or something. I'm sure they will be all ears with the vets at practice, good opportunity for both to learn

I just hope when Pelletier gets a chance, it's on that line.

In politics certainly they are careful about anything said
But what I describe is not unique to hockey
When taking to entities such as the police you always clarify if something is on the record. If you go to press with something that wasn’t on the record, even if unattributed, you will quickly be shut out of getting any more information.

On the record and off the record is certainly not unique to hockey.

I think you are right.
Sutter keeps talking about one more goal and one more save.

If Pelletier comes in looking like he can help give that one more goal he’ll get his game time. Even if he starts w limited ice time and line mates it’s a ticket. If everyone ahead of you performs and the team wins your ticket will not win. If they don’t, the coach will look down the bench and who can give more. Be the first guy on his mind.
