He hasn't fallen off a cliff. He's playing to the level of player he is. There was half a season last year where he played over his head. He's now back to the 30-35 point player he's been since 2019-20.

Probably. But they are paying him for the other half season.

That's the logical thing to do but we won't.
So we just stick it out with this group and maybe someone goes on a heater.
The wrong thing to do is spend picks and prospects on a player who may or may not score here especially if Sutter insists on overplaying Lucic.

Mangiapane has been a big disappointment. Plays keep dying on his stick.

You can tell which posters watched the games and who looked at the box score. I have a tough time feeling like any honest assessment of this game could conclude that the blame lies with Markstrom. I thought both goalies played fantastic. Winnipeg scored on two deflections and a great shot all alone in the slot. Calgary scored on a nice rush and a breakaway. They also hit a few more posts tonight that didn’t go their way.
Calgary played a solid game. I thought they looked like the better team. Winnipeg got one more bounce tonight. Sometimes that happens. The Jets are a good team this year. Nothing to hang your head about tonight.

Adjusting for games played (shortened season, etc), he was closer to a 40-45 point player the two years prior to last.
He’s having the worst season since he’s been a full-time NHLer.

He looked good splitting the defense and going in all alone but that was one of his few shining moments.

The shooting percentage can't stay this low for the rest of the season.
If they keep getting solid starts from the goalies, the wins will come. I just hope it's sooner as opposed to later.

When Lucic is in full flight his speed is ok the issue is that he stands still a lot so when everyone gets going hes already behind because hes in a still position and it takes him a bit to get going.
We need a high energy winger who can skate with that line and finish plays. Ruzicka might not even be the answer. Dube would seem like a solid option but his line is clicking. Really the only options is to dip into the minors and bring someone up because this isn't working and we are wasting games and time.

For me the problem is the high danger chances weren't there tonight. I get the Jets are a good team but they do have quite a few guys out of the lineup tonight.

I could only watch half the game tonight so missed the last half, so forgive me if this is wrong but the main problem with the Flames this season is obviously a lack of game breaking offence. It’s extremely obvious. And it’s why blaming Markstrom, after what I saw in the first where he stood on his head and stopped 3-4 unreal chances, is idiotic.
Calgarys top scorer is Lindholm who ranks 56th in the NHL. Goal scoring is up this year, again. McDavid is sort of on another planet so let’s ignore him but Thompson has like 20 more pts. There is a very huge distinct lack of offence and when Toffoli is your best goal scorer you’re going to have trouble. People blame Markstrom for too many nights off?! What about Dube, what about Mangiapane, what about Kadri, what about Huberdeau. These guys play every second night it seems. Way too inconsistent. Which brings me to Ruzicka, where the hell has he gone?
You know the best part of Sutter when he came in is he was way more of a mercenary at first. He didn’t give a #### who you were, he’d sit you or scratch you if you weren’t playing well. I’m not seeing that same level of required accountability this season?
So goal scoring is alarming and then more importantly, how the #### are we 25th in the NHL in PP?? This is a HUGE problem. Ignore Carolina and NJ, they obviously are doing fine without a great PP. but we need a good PP. According to Sutter, you need an “elite” Dman, and Andersson has been (in my opinion) BAD on the PP. Hesitant to shoot. Way too predisposed to passing (like Huberdeau). Next game talk needs to stress to the whole damn team to shoot and crash. How many times do the Flames get traffic? How many times have we scored on rebounds? Nowhere near enough.
I appreciate that they worked hard. To make the playoffs they need to do this every night. But time to switch Andersson off PP1 as he doesn’t shoot, and time to bring up Phillips on line 2, sit / demote Mangiapane, and / or consider a trade if you wanna make the playoffs.

Even if they don't like Phillips I don't get why they wouldn't promote Pelletier.

Because he isn't reliable enough defensively for this team. One bad play leading to a goal against can be the difference in every game. Too risky if the coaches don't trust a player.

If I am Coronato there is a 0% chance I’m signing with Calgary lol. Like, think about it for 3 seconds in his position. Would you? Or would you conveniently just go back to the draft and end up in the NHL making millions instead of scrounging around in the AHL without a legit shot. And sorry, there’s a 0% chance you’ll convince me that some players this season deserve to play over some in the AHL. The difference is not that big and the ability to free up cap space (see Vrana: Detroit) if somebody claims on a demotion is actually a win for some of these guys. Coleman plays every 6th game, for example. He’s made his money and is now not interested. Time to get guys who will work for contracts, it’s the only way in the NHL to get consistent efforts. It’s also why yes, you have to build through the draft because as soon as you sign big contracts human nature sets in and there’s nothing motivating these guys anymore (not that effort was much of an issue tonight, but too many nights off in previous games this season with valuable points).
|
I understand your point, but I think you take it too far. NHL is a hard league to stick in, let alone make a career. I would argue that coming up in a Sutter system might be an advantage to many players looking to carve out a career. If you can play for Sutter you can play for anyone.
What star players has Sutter or the Flames held back? If Coronato can play, he'll play. If he wants to be a prima dona and walk, then hopefully Treliving can sniff it out and trade him for something.

I can’t disagree with Coffee. If I were in Coronato’s position, I’d be perfectly content to finish off my degree and go to free agency or to inform the Flames that I won’t be signing there and it’s in their best interest to move me.
Being a young player and playing for Darryl Sutter just doesn’t strike me as beneficial to a career.
(and I’m not hammering Sutter/blaming him for the mediocrity that is this season, I just don’t think being a young player under him would be at the top of my list if I had other options)
I do disagree with blender on “if Coronato can play, he’ll play” as that’s not the case under Sutter this year. He has a strong bias and we’ve seen it every night this season. It’s not just about being a “star”. Matthew Phillips has earned an NHL opportunity and Sutter isn’t interested. There’s nothing more Phillips can do at the AHL level to earn a shot, and Sutter said “nah”. Youth in depth positions in important, and Sutter prefers his “safe” (and in some cases, bad) veteran depth.
