this is when the Flames have a chance
teams distracted coming off lengthy breaks with no practice time and teams resigned to being a player on the draft lottery
if we have just enough of those in the schedule, we might squeak into 8th
these are the positive spins people are putting on the season this year

if we get that version of huberdeau most nights and that kind of forechecking pressure from lines 1-4 I do think we win a lot more games
they need to get some tutoring sessions on scoring on goalies though, my god do they make life easy on goalies who are positionally sound

No kidding...why have a PGT if we cant discuss what happened. If the Flames won a game like this we would be talking about them stealing one...Flames very rarely steal one though.
There is more to discussing a game than "they won" or "they lost" otherwise this place wouldn't exist

Or the Flames are 3 points behind last season despite all the changes and seem to be trending in the right direction

Especially if his sniping side kick is Lucic.

Shooting ability matters, of course. But scoring opportunities are generated by good passing, and so far this year, the Flames have been passing the puck like it is a hand grenade.
They haven't lost their skill, they are just struggling to get going.

I'd like to see you show your work on this stat you keep referencing. Are you not counting games played on Tuesdays?

I thought they won 10 in a row though at some point last season. There’s no way this version is winning 10 in a row. They are too inconsistent.
Win 2 lose 1 is probably how they get into the playoffs.
This years team is not comparable to last year. Probably more solid back end but way less skill up front. They need to play mistake free hockey to win games.

They showed it on the broadcast last night...Flames had scored more goals and were 3 points behind last season after 35 games.
Not my made up stats but actual NHL standings
Are you honestly doubting this?

He is one of the many Oiler fanboys on that crap station. Almost every talking head on that station is either an Oiler fanboy or girl or a Leafs fanboy or girl.

I'm in the "I'm not sold on Mangiapane" camp, he was lucky enough to have had a great season and then have a contract due at the right time. Pretty ####ty season so far, more of a liability than asset.

I'm not entirely clear on how much ability he has. I'm not convinced that his production in the first half of last year is his water level.

Last year: 36 games, 18-12-6, 42 pts, 111 goals scored
This year: 36 games, 16-13-7, 39 pts, 111 goals scored
How difficult is that to understand, and why do you feel the need to make silly comments about Tuesday games?

Huberdeau hasn’t but he’s playing with a bunch of stone handed clubs. He’s having a hard time figuring how to serve up even more wide open net shots for his team mates to miss.
He desperately needs a side kick.
Mangiapane has definitely taken a step backwards.

Mangiapane was much better than this in 2019–20 and 2020–21 as well. I think he'll get back there. Aside from the penalties, the Mangiapane–Backlund–Coleman line was dynamite last night.

I can't even follow all the arguing in this thread.
My sense of the season so far is
Reasons to be pessimistic
- The team has struggled to find chemistry and may not have the right combo of players
- On a handful are having better seasons, most are having worse
- The team may lack elite talent
- The team certainly lacks a top 6 forward, and don't have a lot of trade capital to go and get one.
Reasons to be optimistic
- Takes players time to adjust to Sutter
- The West seems to be weak including what point total will be required to get in the post-season
- The team seems to be playing better of late, including key guys like Huberdeau and Markstrom
- They've had a tough schedule so far
Do I think this is a team that is going to win a cup? No I don't. I would peg their chances at around 4-5%.
