Kadri was the 5th best player on that team - It's convenient that you leave out Makar who had 1 less point and plays D, and Landeskog who had more PPG but only played 51 games
Huby was the 3rd best player/most important behind Barkov and Ekblad, and the Panthers thought so highly of him they moved out 3 other assets with him to try and upgrade and bring in a better player - Who many Flames fan don't/didn't think was elite enough to win a cup when he was playing on our team.
And this is the issue - Its not that Huby and Kadri are bad players. It's that Huby should be the 3rd best player on a Stanley Cup contender/favorite and Kadri the 4th.
The Flames are missing an elite, gaming changing center (maybe winger could work) and an elite D, or two elite forwards.
I can buy the argument the Flames D is good enough all round that you don't need the elite leader of the core, but then you need your goalie to be one of those elite players - And to this point Markstrum isn't.
The only chance this team has to be dangerous is for Markstrum to become the leagues most elite goalie during the playoffs (Assuming we get there)

I've been tuning into Flames games less often this year - the uninspired hockey has been tough to watch. Last night, though, I really liked their game. Keep playing like that, please!

Look yes Markstrom was better tonight, and Flames really deserved the win as they were the better team.
Flames attempted 80 shots at the Oilers net and they had 26 the problem I have is they are shooting and not getting any traffic or sticks in front of net and Goalies are seeing the shots, goal posts that's bad luck.
two missed calls by refs on them late could have been a difference and Mangiapane penalty was just stupid on his part and in a game like that turned out to be the difference

He is going to have a very short shelf life behind the Oilers bench, I would think. He's in way over his head.

No he isn’t!
He’s perfect for them.

2 missed calls and 2 late posts....unlucky game. The Flames do need to start finishing more, that way not so much will be left up to luck and things outside of their control.

The Panthers subtracted Huby & Weegar, and added Tkachuk... in doing so, went from PT winners to a bubble team in danger of missing the playoffs.

Haven’t we pretty consistently talked about the Flames taking low quality shots all season? Woodwhatever is just pointing out what we’ve been looking at all season. He’s still an asshat, but he’s not wrong in his assessment.
We’ll see if the way this team is playing “shot volume” will work out over an 82 game season. Through the first 36 games it isn’t working. The Flames are outside of the playoffs.

Regardless of where they are coming from or the "high danger" stat I am a huge fan of shots on net, bring it. The posts will turn into goals and they are working traffic in front, the 5 on 5 shut down of that offense is the big stat for me. All that team has is a big time power play and a junior goalie on a tear. You keep hammering any tender with shots and you will win 8 times out of 10.

This a good post. My gut says the Flames are just not good enough. We might make the playoffs but I dont believe we have the horses, or enough skill in the line up to do much damage. We can win games with hard work but how do we match teams with elite skill come playoff time?

Finishing is a function of confidence. And the Flames' confidence was tested earlier in the season. However, they are playing better and better as we move along. The confidence will return, and when it does, the goals will come.
Suggesting the Flames have no talent is blatantly ignoring what they have each done in prior years.

I see the consensus is the Flames with another moral victory -- have they started giving out points for those yet?

Aaron Ekblad?
Ekblad has never even been the best player on his defense pairing during a season where the Panthers made the playoffs. He's a good player but so highly overrated due to draft pedigree, height, and precocious success. Early on, Brian Campbell was the primary source of his success. More recently, MacKenzie Weegar. And Gustav Forsling has been a higher impact defenseman than him since arriving in Florida.
Ekblad was not more valuable than Huberdeau, and is not more valuable than Tkachuk.
He's an alright value for his contract and age, but let's not pretend he is something he is not.
As for Barkov? Fantastic player, but there are really some bizarre takes about him too. Things like "his line drew all the attention away from Huberdeau's line" - like what team is actively focused on defending a lower scoring player? That's akin to saying Jonathan Toews is the reason for Patrick Kane's success, or taken to an extreme, Mikael Backlund's line drew all the defensive attention so Johnny Gaudreau could score. Hear how asinine that sounds? Barkov is a better player than Huberdeau because of his position and 200 foot game, but Huberdeau didn't hit 115 pts by Leon Draisaitl-ing off a better player's offensive talent.

Everything I said was accurate statistically...Panthers are 10 points out of a playoff spot so I'm not sure their Huberdeau assesment is aging well so far

That's a bit of a dickish way to minimize a discussion and over simplify what people are saying.
