I hope so... I had to open the windows to get some fresh air from having the dual ovens on self clean. Don't worry, I had a few space heaters going to keep warm. Oh... Just heard the dryer beep with my socks in it... It's nice to have fresh-out-of-the-dryer warm socks, but with how cold it is, I have to have pairs on constant rotation, so that dryer's been going non stop.

I have a video meeting with a client in Sydney tomorrow. I assume there will be a 60 degree difference between us.

Also ask if you can see the toilet flush. Should be cool.

I really hope the meeting is titled "60 degrees of separation - A Kevin Bacon consultation".

-30 is great! But I won’t do anything outside.
+30 sucks! I could do anything outside but I won’t because I’m out of shape or don’t like being warm!
There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do because it’s +30. I don’t go outside when it’s -30. It’s easily clear what’s better.

At this thread’s current temperature I wouldn’t be surprised if an ice fishing enthusiast chimed in to start ripping this statement apart.

Pretty sure I never said that, if we're making things up... but Sliver clearly has a preference for -30 over +30, does he not? I'm not trying to convince anybody they should prefer the heat, because who cares. Preferring -30 is pretty overwhelmingly the minority position among Albertans based on their exodus to warm climates every winter vs summer travel.

I still don't understand the metric by which this could possibly be true. Cost, no. Time to get dressed, no. Storage space required for clothes, no...

Wait, you guys are complaining about how to dress and how to be outside in a dry 30c/86F?? That's like a beautiful day to do anything.
Maybe if the argument was -30 vs 40 Celsius I might get it. I run outside at lunch all summer in 40-45 heat indexes and golf 18 holes carrying my clubs. Albeit at those temps, it's tough to be out walking if you need to go in somewhere and be presentable.
30c without much humidity is very comfortable in any kind of regular clothing to do any activity. I don't think I could go back to Calgary and spend much time outside at -30 any more.

What does this mean. Is this the "30° is too for hot clothes and you have nothing else to take off" line of thinking or something else?

I think the argument is that 30° is uncomfortably hot because it's too hot for clothes, whereas -30° you can just put more clothes on until you're comfortable... which is of course only an argument that Canadians would ever make.

Considering very few people have even experienced -30 in Calgary this week, I have no idea why it’s even being discussed.
Unless you’re outside between 3am and 530am the temp is more like -25. Maybe -28 in the evening. Possibly as high as -22 during the day when people are actually out.
We should be talking about the temperature at 3am in July. OMG summer in Calgary is hell! It’s permanently 12C!

It’s not “too hot for clothes,” don’t be silly. When you’re cold, you can just dress up. When you’re hot, there’s a limit to how much you can dress down, so you need to rely on other methods to stay regulated. That’s all. It’s pretty simple. Literally everyone here have presented multiple ways to manage 30 and above that includes swimming, shade, avoiding the hottest part of the day, escaping to AC, etc. If it was perfect, you wouldn’t need to manage it. I don’t “manage” 20 degrees. I just live my life without thinking of the weather at all. THAT is perfect. Some people just find -30 easier to manage, that’s all. Usually it’s because they don’t have AC but do have heat, or run hot instead of cold, or are acclimatized to Calgary better than they’re acclimatized to Glendale. It’s not complicated.
And the acclimatization thing matters. Living in the southern/warmer areas of the US is a completely different experience. I’ve lived there, now I’m like a God when I go home and wear a t-shirt in +10 while others are dressed like people in Calgary dress at -15. It’s the same reason why people in Vancouver lose it when snow and cold temperatures hit.
Some people are better at handling one extreme than the other. I’d wager almost everyone is. And if -30 is the extreme you have trouble handling, I’m sorry, but you’re weak and feeble and I’m going to eat your dumb corpse when nuclear winter hits.

I suppose with easier I was alluding to cost as well, perhaps for those less privileged... because the appropriate footwear for +30 is $2 flip flops while your boots rated for -30 cost a bit more than that.
|
Less privileged people also live in the arctic, people from the northern tribes have lived there for generations.
