+1 sucks. Everything becomes gross slush. Despite the cold, it is nice out.

- If you do see ice buildup on windows, try to mop it up, and turn on your furnace fan to circulate air. Make sure your blinds/curtains are all the way open as much as possible.
- Run bathroom exhaust fans for 45-60 mins after showers/baths to assure the exhaust vents are cleared of steam.
- Make sure your dryer vents don't get ice buildup. It doesn't take too long to melt once the dryer is running but you risk clothes or fabrics burning in the meantime.
These items of advice are from my sister in the home service industry that's been responding to emergency home heating/water calls all day.

- Do the opposite if you don't have a humidifier.
I kept the stove fan off last night while making pasta to get the bonus humidity. Managed to get it up to 16%. My knuckles are bleeding.

When it’s -30, I can layer up. I can also sleep at night.
When the temperature is in the mid 20s or above at night, sleeping is difficult and disrupted even when completely delayered.
That is why I prefer cold weather - it is more comfortable and easier to manage.

Beach weather is superior when you're on vacation. But I'm not on vacation, I'm at work. I don't want to be sweating and have a headache, I want to be comfortable

Yeah, this. I understand -30 is dangerous and very cold, but I have only been slightly uncomfortable for a few minutes over the last few days. Otherwise I’m in my warm house, my warm vehicle, my warm office, the warm mall, etc. If I need to be outside beyond a couple minutes, I’m in my warm parka, warm snow pants, warm sorels, warm gortex mitts, warm hat, etc. I’ve probably been too hot more than too cold the last couple days.
Yes, given the option of being outside for 24 hours naked literally every person on earth is going to choose +30 over -30, congrats on this astounding revelation. But in terms of just going about my daily business? -30 is easier to manage for me, personally, than +30.
Anyway this is one of my favourite repeat conversations. Love most of you and hope almost none of you freeze to death.

+30 sucks. -30 sucks. +1 apparently also sucks.

August 11th, 2018 was our Calgary record, a little over 36 degrees I believe.

Well...no.
+1 only sucks within context.
On a normal day +1 is perfectly cromulent, but after a long cold snap it makes everything filthy.
Extreme temperatures are just generally unpleasant. They make everyday task more uncomfortable and difficult.
Mild temperatures are fine for the most part except when they come immediately after extremes, thats when there are more moving pieces to consider.

You realize all those sidewalks, shopping centres, etc. were all cleared of snow by guys outside, right? Like, there are people working outside right now because there is such thing as clothes. If you walk outside you won't die.
I'm lethargic and miserable in +30. I hate it. In -30 I can choose clothing to make me an absolutely perfect temperature. I will say this, neither -30 nor +30 is ideal. I'll take +20 over -30, over -20, over -10, over 0 and over +10. It's not like I want to live in an igloo, but I am more comfortable in Calgary's coldest temps versus its warmest temps.
|
Because you can only put on one set of gloves, and maybe some mittens over top, before working outside is completely impossible. OMFG, why do people that work in a warehouse think that it's ridiculous to work outside in minus 30!!111!!
I mean, seriously. Work stops at this temperature. At plus 30 it just slows down to "lethargic". Minus 30 is finger losing, glue not adhering, people dying temperatures. But please, continue to tell me that minus 30 is better. I'm all ears. At least, the portions that didn't fall off from frostbite.

We're still debating this?
Either way, looks like Saturday we're out of this, just in time for Xmas. As much I'd love some cozy cold for Christmas, the added accidents and deaths on the roads that the cold brings definitely isn't worth it.

Yeah, we are. Go read a different thread if you weren't prepared to read about weather in the weather thread.
Sliver seems to think that existence in this climate is binary. You're either outside with a Canada Goose jacket and long johns, or you're inside wearing regular, everyday slacks. There are, however a lot of jobs and reasons to go outside and then inside, for periods of time that involve stripping layers, and then putting them back on. But that doesn't matter to someone that doesn't think things from any other vantage point than his own.
Even just thinking of a job such as police, EMS, or firefighter, how about spending great portions of the day inside a car, truck, or ambulance, only to be outside for two hours. Are you going to wear three or four layers all day long to hedge that?

The train also doesn't get stuck in +30 completely closing off 4th ave. That's a bonus.
