Stopped using Twitter last week... Locked my accounts, deleted all my DMs and got a backup of my tweets.
Been over on Mastodon Canada, and getting a decent amount of content with 200-some follows.

I have repeatedly tried to deactivate my account and it always just says failed.
I suspect Elon has disabled that feature to prevent a mass exodus.

LOL at 'assassination coordinates'. So what exactly are the rules then? You can't post anybody's exact location, or just his? (pretty sure I already know the answer). Because I'm on twitter mainly for hockey follows. Are they not allowed now to say who's playing, or scoring, or whatever for a day or two?

Sure adding BBCode is pretty easy, it just requires a way to identify the post and generate the HTML. Twitter has an API to do this, I'll have to see if Mastadon has the same.

I recall when I closed my account just over a month ago, that it took several attempts as it kept failing.
Eventually, it worked.
After reading your post, I tried to log in to see if the account was deleted because when you deactivate your account, there is a 30 days grace period where you can reactivate it prior to it being fully deleted.
My account is gone.

I do find it pretty funny that people have been storming off Twitter because of things like the banning of parody accounts and restrictions on doxxing, but then the mstdn.ca ToS outlaw both parody accounts and doxxing.
