Is Lucic done until the Phillips audition is over?
Looks like Zahorna has replaced Rooney.

If Phillips doesn’t stick I hope they audition Zary and Pelletier the same way.

A young dman for Stone might be in order as well. There are a few on the farm. Don’t think Mackey is the guy. I didn’t mind Gilbert.

I fully agree. I'm hopeful that the flames take a 'part-time' approach to Lucic. Put him in for the games against slower, more physical teams - he'll be more useful in those games since a) he'll be fresh and rested and b) his footspeed will be less of an issue.

For an older team like the Flames it could be highly beneficial to not try and have guys be ironmen, scratch players when they're so fatigued that their play drops off so that they can recover and play well again.

Highly unlikely that the Flames do that though, given their track record of injury management, much less fatigue management.

Neither ref tonight is from Quebec but Michael Markovic who reffed on Saturday is one of them.

Lol not from Quebec, but a francophone new brunswikian surely wouldn't have grown up a habs fan...
Meh, I jest. I have LONG held strong opinions against the reffing in the league in general. I get clowned every time i post about it, but there is legit an easy way we could plan to eliminate on ice reffing entirely from the league, there just seems to be a culture stigma against it. On ice refs blow and are horrible for the product though.
That all said, I don't think that the reffing problems are as simple as them favoring teams they grew up with. If that were the case Toronto would have won a cup in the last 50 years. Sutter is totally out to lunch with that take.

As for Lucic, I would love to know how far along the reported contract extension talks went. What were the flames willing to entertain?
Hard to imagine there's an offer on the table now.

Weegar is probably going to fall pray to "Brodie" syndrome in the calgary market, where his unremarkable good defensive play is never noticed by casual fans but the exceedingly rare gaffe gets remembered for weeks/months. Weegar did notably toss a puck up the middle for a giveaway and breakaway against/goal 2 games ago.

He's also a much better player than Brodie in other ways IMO, but I think we will see people continue to use the same type of slant they did against TJ while he was here.

Still haven’t seen him be a game breaker though. That’s what he is paid for

As long as it's around a million or less they can burry it so not a lot of risk.

Though if he's going to be a healthy scratch often down the stretch that will be less likely from his side as well.

I maintain my opinion that the top line is not a good 5 v 5 line for creating offense. The players don't gel well for that purpose. They're all good players, and they're all able to move the puck N/S very strongly, but they just don't have the chemistry. My #1 priority would be finding good offensive chemistry linemate for Huberdeau.

And he's got just enough skating ability and offensive skill that people think he should be able to produce more offense, but ends up disappointing them.

Holy ####, he's totally Brodie now that I look at it.

Yeah the financial and salary cap risk would be low to non existent. But I still don't see the point really. The upside is pretty much gone from his game.

But wasn't Weegar's issue in Florida is that he was high risk/high reward? That and he was abysmal in the playoffs.

Not seeing the first part here which is fine with me. I did expect he would have more prominent role in gaining the zone and maintaining possession though. This team doesn't have a ton of puck carriers.

As far as production, he did seem to be good for 0.5 points a game in FLA. I would take something close to that.

I've seen Huberdeau make some unreal passes that appear to be surprising his linemates.

As the season goes on, I think his linemates will continue to adjust. Just go to the net with your stick on the ice and he'll find a way.

Didn't pass the eye test! But fine, my attempt at a joke will get demolished by the stats. I'm good with that |
