Don't think it's ridiculous to say the Flames had a lot of looks with Phillips on the ice. He was noticeable. He battled in front of the net and set up plays. He took shots. He was sheltered, and he took advantage.
Not saying he's a superstar or anything close right away but he's far and away better than the likes of Lucic and Rooney down there. He has earned a bit of rope.

This game reminded me how much I hate the Leafs and the refs.

People giving up on the season should take a look at the standings Jan 1 last season
Not just talking Flames either

Still doesn’t understand why Rosie didn’t get an assist on the second Hanifin goal

Leafs have not won a game when giving up four goals. 0-5-4. Kiss of death. Once that was said flames had no chance

Huberdeau isn't even worth his contract right now, let alone the raise he's getting next year. Yikes.

most of the flames penalties were legitimate
problem is they missed about 2-4 easy ones on the leafs, but somehow missed those

The discussion now should be whether Ritchie or Lucic can play in the top 9. Not because of how well Phillips played (although I think he looked good) but because the Flames has a decent 4th line for the first time all season.

Im saying pointing to advanced stats in a guy who played 7 minutes (2nd lowest on the team) and was on the ice for all of 3 shots for and 2 against isnt going to tell you much.
Do you disagree he had trouble possesing the puck and was often falling?

8 more years. New contract doesn't start until next year. He makes 5.9 million this year. So he's close to playing up to this contract.

Happy with the point to me its just a tie with stupid ways to finish the game. Take the point next game stay out of the box, much better game.

|
People see what they wanna see, I guess.
I saw Phillips with multiple key takeaways, a solid zone entry on the pp about fifteen seconds before the Hanifin goal, a solid zone exit that resulted in genuine speed down the middle (something this team sorely lacks), a puck battle in the corner that resulted in a glorious Mangiapane chance, and just a general level of play that made dropping Coleman down a line possible. And no, I don't think Phillips was even the second best player on his line, but that's a testament to how strongly the other two have been for us.

I agree I'd way rather have him in than Lucic. But he seemed shaky. Hope its first game nerves.

|
He was falling because he was battling for position and causing disruptions. He's small, but he wasn't destroyed out there by any means.
I do disagree, though, that he had any trouble possessing the puck. His passes were crisp and I don't remember him turning it over at all.

I would say it was a good game for a bubble team, but nothing inspiring. They did a good job killing off so many penalties, but the offense still looks totally uninspired. The first three goals were all nice shots, but not really exciting plays, and they were lucky to have the fourth goal trickle through on a weak save. A goal is a goal, but none of them were exciting or creative plays.
They didn't play poorly. They're just not playing very fun hockey to watch.
