If Phillips can assist on a Lucic goal that might be a bigger accomplishment than a Phillips goal.

Mangiapane started on the 4th line and fought his way up the line up. Phillips will have to do the same.

I don’t know why people struggle with this so much. If you can show you belong in the NHL playing on the 4th line, you secure your spot. Sutter very obviously does not care if Phillips scores or not, he’s not judging him on that, he wants him to play the right way.
The only people who care if Phillips pots a goal in his first game are over-eager fans. If he plays well he’ll stay up.

If Phillips wants to be on the good side of Sutter and remain in lineup, he’s going to have to show he can play in the defensive zone and play a dump and chase game on 4th line.

Interested what Sutter has to say today. He praised Tkachuk with some interesting insight when the Flames were in Florida. Wonder what he has to say about Gaudreau.

NHL is a lot faster than the AHL. If the plan is a long term call up then he’ll get acclimated on the 4th line. He wasn’t going to play with Huberdeau right away

Or they play him up the lineup and he looks a bit lost and gets sent down.

I do agree with playing him on the 4th line for the first 1-2 games. Obviously Phillips has been brough it in to produce points, but who would you demote to the 4th line right now? I think all of the bubble top 9 players that could be demoted to the 4th line have been playing their best hockey as of late.
Plus, Phillips is the type of player that can elevate other players, he is the one that creates chances and drives the play.
It won't hurt him to play on the 4th line for a bit, especially since Sutter plays the 4th line 10-12 minutes per night if they are actually having a good game.

I don't think he has to produce.
He has to show that he can help make this trio more successful than Rooney and/or Ritchie managed.
I think Sutter would be happy with five games and no points, but more even up shifts without the fourth line getting caved in.

I hope that's not the case as it's a massive burden for an AHL call up. Phillips could play excellent and that line may still be under water because Lewis and Lucic are 2/3 of the reason the 4th line gets caved in night after night. I'm hoping that he focuses on Phillips play and not the line because Phillips is probably not going to be able to make up for the poor play of his linemates. If he somehow manages to lift the play of his linemates then he's certainly deserving of a higher role.

It'll be a big task but very impressive if he can manage it ... would hope they take Lucic out before Phillips if things go south, though.
No problem at all with Darryl putting him on L4.

I'm sure they're smart enough to realize where the mistakes are made and how each player on the fourth line fares in a hockey game. They do it daily in making decisions on who is in and out of the lineup.
He has to be better than Ritchie as I said.
If he coughs the puck up less and handles his defensive assignments he'll be fine and stay in.
He could possible add to the line in transition with his boots and hands.
Wasn't suggesting he had to turn the fourth line into a play driving force.

My only real concern is that usually the centre and D trio decide if a line is getting caved in, and Zadorov-Lewis-Stone might not be up to the task.

@WesGilbertson
Johnny Gaudreau hosted seven or eight former #Flames teammates, plus some equipment-staffers, for dinner last night at his house in Columbus. “They came over, hung out, got to meet my daughter. It was special ... It was great to spend time with them.”
