Signing anywhere for any player is to very very low odds of winning the Stanley Cup. The odds for every player are ridiculously low.

Most players would want to at least be on a competitive team that will likely make the playoffs

Yup, even guys like Corey Perry playing well under market value struggle to find that right team.

FWIW, I am a friend of someone who played summer league w him and Tony DeAngelo, and he tells me that JG regrets the decision to sign w Columbus. His summer league buddies gave him crap all summer at how poorly he handled it and what an opportunity he gave away leaving Calgary and he'd always just have that "I know" look.
My source isn't on CP as he's a Flyers fan and lives on the east coast (obviously). And I don't really feel the need to verify. So believe what you will.

I wanted the Flames to sign Corey Perry.... I know we hated him here, because he was hard to play against - which is why I wanted us to sign him.... he's been to what - three straight finals... pretty amazing since leaving the Ducks.... the only other guy like that is Patrick Maroon after leaving Edmonton. Perry has been the runner up, Maroon has won most of them (last year aside for Maroon).
On topic: I think Johnny will regret leaving Calgary.... I have always said that, his numbers won't be the same and I think he'll regret it like Conroy did. He won't be a star in Columbus... at least, I don't think they'll (fans) treat him as good as we did here. I think after a few years in Columbus, he'll be moving on to somewhere else, he won't outlast even half his contracted years there.

I'll say this much - if the Jackets want to trade him back to Calgary any time in the next two years, I'd welcome him back without any hesitation whatsoever.
Of course, I'd insist they retain $1 of his salary, just because screw Columbus.

He left and signed with Blue Jackets and we didn't get any asset for him. Now we have to give asset to get him back? No bloody way, unless, Blue Jackets retain 50% and for a 4th round.

Get er done Brad? Joking aside im conflicted on him now. I also don't think management would be on board with it how it all went down.

Contract have a nmc? If not I think he’s going to be traded as early as the trade deadline.

The Flames issue isn't offense at all IMO.
It's team defense and he would not help one lick in that area as great as he is in the offensive zone.
In Sutters system, offense comes off playing team D, and they just haven't figured it all out yet with all the new faces.
It will come.

The Flames have the 3rd best expected goals against and the 4th best high danger chances against. They also have the 4th best Corsi for and Fenwick for.
Team defense doesn't seem to be a problem. The Zarodov-Stone pairing and the Tanev-Weegar pairing are among the most effective pairings in the league from an analytics standpoint.
Really, the only problem with team is goaltending. That's it. Not defense. The Flames are still elite in that regard.

What a raw deal lol. We actually did the exact opposite in our life and we're pretty happy.
I actually love johnny. I feel bad for him because he made a terrible choice, but only have fond memories of his time here. If you understand human nature, you come to the conclusion that there's a 90% chance he's going to be like "Michael, I've made a huge mistake" at some point in the next year or two.

And here you go again: all about you.
You are assuming she pressured Johnny into going to the Jackets, yet every single post on this thread constantly says she wanted to stay. Yet you want to blame her. And then you throw your own wife under the bus.
Maybe realize that she chose to lay down her own desires and to support her husband and choose Columbus with him - pregnant if I recall right and due soon in that time period. And you’re so arrogant that you can’t see that your wife chose to lay down much of her own desires for you, and yet you say if she had ‘held you back’ in a career that you basically have no issue in moving on from her.
Your selfishness is disgusting. You don’t know the Gaudreau’s at all, so quit making assumptions that you want to have about his wife. For all we know, it sounds more like she didn’t want to move on from Calgary, but she prioritized her husband and unborn child over where she wanted to live. She has way more integrity and heart than you’ll ever have. She chose to be united and supportive of her husband. Johnny stated many times his desire to play for the Jackets and heard how many players loved it there. So in all honesty, good for him.
Quit attacking his wife and focus on improving your own self so your marriage can flourish. Your wife will appreciate it immensely!

Can we just lock this thread? There’s nothing left to discuss (outrage and argue) about with this signing. We already have the Former Flame Performance thread if anyone cares to discuss Gaudreau’s play on the ice.

He woulda caught Jarome in points and Al in assists. He would have become a club legend.
